Thiel Owners

Owners of standard CS2.4 speakers may be interested to know that the only internal difference that makes a 2.4SE is the use of ClarityCap SA film capacitors.  DIYers can make this upgrade or better by substituting the more recently introduced ESA range.

As mentioned in Stereophile, Kathy Gornik sold to VC interests led by CEO Bill Thomas. Bill was succeeded by John Wittman, who was replaced this year by Thomas Malatesta(reportedly from Proctor & Gamble.) The current designs were done by Mark Mason(formerly of PSB), who is no longer on board. Ouch! It appears that at least final assembly is done in Nashville.

Googling Mr. Malatesta, it appears that he is an investor and founder of a number of start-ups in audio streaming, smart phone, and cybersecurity technologies. With respect to Thiel, it's possible that he was taken on as a turnaround specialist.

Thanks for mentioning this, Jafant. In addition to supplying Thiel with ClarityCaps for the 2.4SE model, just prior to the sale of the company we were working with Thiel on an upgrade to the CS3.7 crossover. I’d be pleased to offer thoughts to anyone interested in exploring that.

When selling to OEMs like Thiel, custom capacitor values are often supplied directly by ClarityCap. I recently gave Rob a OEM price schedule for ClarityCap legacy model SA/630V(as used in the original 2.4SE) and our new, improved models(CSA/630V, CSA/250V, CMR/400V). Given sufficient demand, perhaps Rob could offer those as upgrades, or alternatively I could coordinate a group buy.
