Actually the bookshelf units are between 800-1000. I think the Prestige are what you are thinking of.   
Emotiva equipmet, how good is it?
Wow this is all very helpful. I am going to try and audition a few items at my local shop.  They sell the Emotiva and others.  I like some of the other suggestions and am looking at those too.  I also look at the Cambridge AUDIO CXA80 and wondered...

Thank you.  My budget is around $1,000 to $1,200.  I know I won't be going true hi-end but you have to start somewhere so my expectations are not super high, but I do want to hear more than what you get on a Dewalt work radio so to speak.  I used ... 
Preamp advice needed.
I test drove a used Superphon the other day.  I was impressed, but it is old school and limited in inputs.  Also hard to find.  But it is good to warm up a bright system. It was recommended not to look at their amps.  So I have no opinion there. 
Best bookshelf speakers
So I didn't hear much if any mention on Usher, Spendor, Vienna,or Totem.  Some very good stuff there.  But so much depends on the electronics you have with them.  Currently auditioning a set of Boxers (Nola) myself.  Such a difference from the KEF...

Go listen to the small Ushers S-520. Also there are multiple KEF, Paradigim, and the list goes on. Your ears will tell you what you like, and so much is based on the equipment that is plugged into the wall. One thing I find is the equipment built ...
