Headphone Driver Balance? (Single Driver)
I can’t comment on headphone driver technology because I’m not an engineer, but I’m very familiar with headphones. Like you, I have always liked the balance my Stax phones (009s) deliver. You probably know that there are several styles of headphon...
Best Headphone system under $1000???
I believe there are some trickle-down technology benefits from some of the companies that offer megabuck phones, i.e. Focal, Hifiman, Sennheiser and others, in their lesser-priced models. I would start with used phones in my price range and move u...
To all that has a Theta Miles CD player
Sounds like the textbook first sign of a failing laser. I hope I’m wrong, but that Theta really is a dinosaur. Probably time to start shopping for a new (or used) transport. FYI, there’s a Theta Miles transport for sale here for $899.
Solid platforms or speaker stands for JBL L65s?
You should find wood risers on eBay, complete with JBL logos. I can’t say if the JBL logo is from the factory, but I think they look cool in any case. They were very reasonably priced when I saw them.
Why do some manufacturers reverse preamp polarity in the first place?
My preamp (MFA Magus B) inverts polarity, according to the manual. I asked this same question some time ago on another thread and never got an answer. Trying to do the recommended fix, l reversed the leads to the speakers. I really haven’t noticed...
Are manufacturers having discussions removed from Audiogon if they turn negative?
Elizabeth’s account (posted on 1/26) of her experience with Magnepan underscores why it is important to do business with quality companies that have a track record and are committed to customer service. It’s your money, so you decide who you do bu...
Preamps with separate L/R volume controls
MFA Magus (three versions). In addition to the left and right controls, it has a main volume dial. Mine works fine but they are impossible to find.
Isn't a wondeful time to be an audiophile?
As so many have said, it’s a good time to be an audiophile. With so many 60+ longtime audiophiles retiring, many are downsizing. They realize that they can’t take it with them and are willing to part with some great equipment at prices much lower ...
RIP Peter Tork
Reminds me to see these performers while we can. Just saw Herman’s Hermits (with Peter Noone) in a show at a 55+ resort. It was a short show, about an hour, but lots of fun. Peter N has been doing these shows for over 50 years. He still does his s...
Cable Company Contracts
We just passed the one year mark in our new home and I see that my cost for bundling our cable needs have just gone up. I have come to the conclusion that cable companies offer you a temporary, discounted rate to start, hoping that you will set it...
CD no more produced?
Just FYI, most thrift stores and consignment stores (even Goodwill stores) stock CDs at cheap prices, usually less than two dollars. I recently found Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Wall” still sealed in plastic, for forty cents each...
Tekton Design's new THE PERFECT SET equals "goosebumps time"
A previous responder wrote, “There are a couple of issues that jump out to me immediately. The manufacturer (Tekton) chooses to sell direct and has no distribution network.” And further, “This business model is good at cost constraint, but suffers...
What responsibility does a seller have to tell a customer an item has been serviced?
Look, once you buy used stereo equipment, you own it. Looking for a reason to void the sale, like the screws had been turned indicating that repairs had been done, is childish. If you think you made a mistake, or realize you really can’t afford it...
What responsibility does a seller have to tell a customer an item has been serviced?
Actually, this post reveals nothing (that’s right, nothing) about who to buy from and who not to buy from. After reading the responses, it seems clear that most believe that buying used equipment, especially vintage used stereo equipment is an “as...
What responsibility does a seller have to tell a customer an item has been serviced?
Elizabeth’s suggestion of a plaque to commemorate this horrible transaction is hilarious (LOL)!
