Audible Illusions...GREAT SERVICE

I recently needed to send my M3A preamp back to AI to have the volume controls replaced due to deteriorating contacts. Needless to say, I was afraid to part with the preamp because of the many horror stories that I had heard about AI having peoples equipment for months before returning it. I was told by several people not to sent my preamp in if at all possible. I contacted Art Ferris at AI and I was assured that problems in getting peoples equipment back had occurred when they were doing upgrades. They no longer do upgrades. If you want the newest version of the preamp you just send your old unit in with a check for half the price of a new unit and you are shipped a brand new unit. To make a long story short, I recieved my unit back within 2 weeks of shipping it and it sounds better than ever! I know, changing volume controls shouldn't make that much difference in the sound, but I suspect that other improvements were made. Anyway, I just wanted to let people know that I found Art Ferris and Audible Illusions to offer GREAT and very fast service. Thanks Art.
slowhand
Their number is 925-463-2380. You may get an answering machine when you call, if so, leave a message. They were always good about getting back to me.
Ramstl is correct, a volume control makes an enormous difference and ofter overlooked in most of todays gear. It is likely that is all that was done to your unit.
i got mine back and they forgot to replace the volume controls. there aren't any. it's got beautiful black background but that's about all i can say for the mod.
From my experience of requesting a service review and update of my AI Modulus 3A, Art Ferris was the absolute worse in communication and turnaround. He overcharged me as well by not returning my original black knobs of my 3A with my preamp when he upgraded the face panel to silver with silver knobs (I paid for the new knobs outright without a cost offset). He also overcharged me by stealing my premium grade tubes from the unit and replacing them with standard AI stock for a fee. I lost $300+ in the tubes he stole and had to pay him for his replacement tubes. The man clearly doesn’t respect customer work order agreements. I waited over 6-9 months for AI to service and return my preamp.
slowhand, that's nice to see....but it'll take a lot(!) more of such reporting before I consider buying their gear. I've never even seriously considered their stuff, due to their reputation. Hopefully that will happen. Sometimes it takes a long time for the stink to completely evaporate.
The AI Modulus 3A is the best Preamp in the world regardless of money. I had one for such a long time, but one day it needed service and sent it to the factory, it took about a year to get it back. I had to get a lawyer to get it back. Because of this reason I sold it and had been without a preamp ever since, soon I have to get another tube preamp since I have a Jolida 801 Integrated tube amp. I want a balanced one now when I get the Bryston 4B3.
In the 1990’s Ric Schultz of EVS (who had preciously worked for Art Ferris at Audible Illusions) offered a series of mods for the Modulus 2 preamps, which considerably improved it’s sound. I don’t know if he still offers them.
