I don't know about the absoulte best,but if you like a great mix of vocals,piano,orchestra and precussion, then Vanessa Carlton's "Be Not Nobody" is great. It works well for auditioning equipment,especially speakers because it is a great recording as far as quality and it has some dynamics as well. And the Music is very good overall too.
Ella, hands down....check the xrcd version of Joe Pass and Ella titled "Take it Easy".
Alison Krauss on Now That I've Found You. It will knock your socks off. #2 has gotta be Etta James doing Something's got a hold on me.
IMHO you can't talk of great female vocalists with out mentioning Sandy Denny, Annie Haslam or Lorena McKennett!!
