[quote]04-29-06: Mrtennis i have listened to robert's latest interconnect cable in my stereo system. i would say it is a decent silver cable.
i personally would not want to own it or recommend it to anyone else. Besides being a cheap shot, this statement has nothing to do with line cords, which is the topic of this thread. |
I agree wholeheartedly with Albertporter. |
I believe we all should be allowed to use our own good judgement to determine when the mention of a product by a manufacturer is a blatant stab at guerilla marketing or when it is mentioned in the context of an explanation that contributes to the discussion. The two scenarios are not difficult to differentiate. |
Without the contribution of knowledgable people who are experts in their chosen audio specialties, this site would be significantly less than what it is, and I suspect more than a few people would sign off permanently. Frankly, I wish manufactuturers and designers would participate more often. It'd cut through a lot of disinformation. |
Go drop a Purist Dominus power cable on your favorite power amp, or DAC or preamp for that matter, and make note of the bottom octave presence and control that was not there before.
John Jafox (Threads | Answers) Exactly! Exactly! Exactly! Furthermore, experiment with a Dominus Fluid and Dominus Ferrox, and hear the differences the two materials make on the sound. Wouldn't have believed it two years ago, but I've heard their magic in three different systems as the cords have been progressively added, and the results are conclusive. Oh yeah, one of us is a non-techie and ex- drummer, another is a medical technician and piano player, and the third works in the Physics department of one of the finest universities in the USA. You couldn't get a more disparate background of audiophiles who all agree on the benefits of aftermarket power cords. |
i recently spoke to a cable designer and he asserts that the metal, dielectric, dampening material, geometry, shielding or the lack thereof, connectors and the connection--solder or other, all affect the performance of a line cord.
i guess there is no definitive answer as to this question. Mrtennis (Threads | Answers) IMO, the answer from the cable designer seems to address the question in a definitve manner. Mrtennis, please take this next observation in the good humored spirit in which it is intended. Now knowing your profession, it's clear to me why the majority of your threads begin with a question, and end with an answer from you. It's because your thread methodology is entirely in keeping with the technique of a trial attorney, which is to only pose a question if the answer is known. Gotcha! :) |
Tvad: Gee, a cable designer said it makes a difference, so therefore it does. But, he gives no explanation for the reason, no facts, no information based on his own experience in the lab, no experimental data, nothing other than his own opinion, which is what he uses to sell cable at 500 to 2000% markup. My opinion is that no designer is required to provide any information which is proprietary to his product. Not providing a technical explanation does not by default correlate to fraud. Coca Cola does not share its recipe for Coke, and yet few argue that people enjoy the beverage without having to know the formula. If you want some technical discussion about the effects of resistance, inductance and capacitance on cables, you might take a look at this from Alpha-Core. Also, many recognize the benefits of wire geometry and shielding to reduce EMI/RFI. Canare (and others) utilize a four conductor starquad array, which is explained here. I realize this is a discussion of speaker wire, but the principles apply to other wires. Finally, having read enough of Mrt's threads, it is clear to me that he does not ask a question to get a definitive answer as much as he asks the question to provoke heated discussion. He is a baiter in poor disguise. So be it. This debate over wire is a no win situation, as has been proven time and time again in a dozen or more threads on the topic of wire. Eventually entropy prevails, and the threads unwind into posts that convey frustration and anger. This one will get there eventually, too. In the meantime, if anyone cares to learn some science behind cable design, then take a look at the links above. |
OK, Metro04.
In the meantime, did you read the information presented in the links I provided. Does ANY of what is written on those pages provide anything valuable to you? |
Good luck on your quest, Metro04.
I guess Ill stay on my side of the fence if youll agree to stay on your side of the fence, and well each agree to keep our respective hands offn each others womenfolk and livestock.
You, too, MrT. Hands off the chickens.

05-09-06: Mrtennis hi tvad, my background is economics, math and psychology, not law. my vocations have been software development and writing. Oh. I based my comment on this quote from you. i must admit, i enjoy your british humor, it is so biting and civilized, but as a lawyer, i'd bury you in court. Mrtennis (Threads | Answers) Guess it was just more Three Card Monte from you, MrT. |

Tvad: I wasn't asking for proprietary secrets. I was asking for some data indicating their cables improvement. For example, you bought a power amplifier for your stereo, certainly you asked it was tube, solid state, what power it has, signal to noise ratio, current capacity, perhaps you even talked to the manufacturer about their philosophy in design. All of this provides good data and information, yet is not proprietary. Spatialking (Threads | Answers) Data is data, in my opinion. Whether the specs in the data correlate to improvement in sound is open to subjective interpretation. I own a VAC tube amp. I am certain its specs measure significantly poorer than a $200 Technics HT receiver, yet I prefer the sound of the VAC, and I would bet most audiophiles would, too. Of course, there are also audiophiles who would prefer the Technics HT receiver with its superior distortion specs. It's all about what one hears, and prefers. I appreciate your need to know measurements. I prefer to go with what my ears tell me. Call me crazy. Call me wasteful. It's my money, and I'll spend it as I wish. |
MrT, the phrase as a lawyer implies you are one. The phrase, if I was a lawyer, suggests you possess the strong debating and analytical skills of a lawyer, which might enable you to win a debate with Guidocorona. For such a self-proclaimed learned individual, your misuse of the English language is confounding, odd, and perhaps purposely manipulative. Its hard to tell. I mention this because the answer to the puzzle is germane to how one approaches your threads.
Frankly, at this point, I question anything to which you lay claim regarding your background or areas of expertise.
As an astronaut...
Oh, never mind. :) |
considering the subjects discussed, the relative unimportance of the subject and the banter that has been exchanged to date, i think you need help.
would you like me to provide the name of therapist ? Mrtennis (Threads | Answers) MrT, based on your threads and answers, I don't believe you are qualified. Your diagnosis is simply a recognition of my BS meter pinning when I read your posts. |
05-10-06: Gregm Tvad notes: Data is data(...)Whether the specs in the data correlate to improvement in sound is open to subjective interpretation.
I'd agree in principle with what follows -- BUT data and their correlation would be "objective". You probably mean that, first, we formulate a theory of what data indicate audible differences and, then we set about to confirm that theory (i.e. "objectivise" the subjective)... Gregm, what I meant by my post is that data and specs tell us only part of the story. When we start to discuss what entails good sound, or preferable sound, then we enter the world of subjectivity, since we are discussing opinion. So, while superior test measurements may indicate a superior audio product based on objective criteria, this may not correlate with what some audiophiles consider good sound. However, I'm also certain the engineers who designed an uber-spec'd component would hold steadfast in their preference for that component over one that had inferior measurements. This is what I attempted to explain with my VAC amp illustration. |
the entertainment i get from reading and answering posts is more gratifying than listening to the "best" stereo system that anyone could assemble. Mrtennis (Threads | Answers) MrT, you are an admitted lo-fi aficionado, and your posts on the topic of equipment and listening preferences appear to be attempts to validate your choices. Theres no need for affirmation, MrT. Your choices are fine. The post referenced above is sad, and telling of your motivation to generate new threads, which appear to be forms of personal therapy comprised of a self prescribed treatment that entails poking a stick into as many hornets nests as possible without getting stung. No stings = a good day. Good Day, MrT. |
You'll need an electronvelocitormeter...it will also enable you to adjust the proper level of headlight fluid in your car. Audiofeil (Answers) Oh great, another chore for the weekend! I forgot to check my headlight fluid the last time I put water in my tires. |
Recently an AC worm infiltrated my power conditioner rendering it useless. Audiofeil (Answers) All kidding aside, do you know if Ortho "Bug-Geta" Snail Bait will work on the AC worm? If not, we also have some worm pills we keep handy for our cat. |
Now they all move in the same direction, at the same time, in lock step. Audiofeil (Answers) No doubt accompanied by the "Schoen ist es, Soldat zu sein" march. |
