My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!
So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:
Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series NAD M25 PARASOUND HALO PARASOUND CLASSIC KRELL TAS KRELL KAV 500 KRELL CHORUS ROTEL RMB 1095 CLASSE CT 5300 CLASSE CA 2200 CLASSE CA 5200 MCINTOSH MC 205 CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7 OUTLAW AUDIO 755 LEXICON RX7 PASS LABS XA 30.8 BUTLER AUDIO 5150 ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005
With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer. My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)
NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes) Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)
Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)
rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)
cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)
parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)
lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)
McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.
butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)
pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.
classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)
Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:
PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way. Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely. Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d? Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp. Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass. It is articulate sounding too Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s. Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair. Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things. Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch. Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either. Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below. Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned. My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.
That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!
I would love to try your m400s. That amp is on my bucket list. as far as Wilsons having a small sweet spot, I’m not sure yet. I heard them before I bought them and they sounded great to my ears but I can’t report yet until my room begins to take shape tonight. My intention is to begin my first listening sessions tomorrow during the day at some point. I have heard from 3 other friends and they all have their money on the ref 10/pass 350.8 combo. What’s interesting to me is most people are writing off the black system but these are also people who are “old school” and in their late 50s. I’m not sure if age has to do with it but I noticed that the people who are voting for the ref10/pass combo have not heard or even seen the black system in person. I have a soft spot for the ref10 but I’m quite nervous that the new black system I have has improved drastically in terms of sound after its latest update which added mqa and a bunch of other connections on the back that were not present before. The update pretty much meant gutting the entire preamp and putting all new guts with the only thing kept in place being the chassis. That’s it. I remember listening to the black integrated in my home and omg that thing had MASSIVE bass. It sounded full and crazy powerful with insane control. The one thing I need to take into consideration is that this black system may need to be broken in. I may need to plug it in the leave on for a long time before I can hear it hit its stride.
I have D'Agostino M400 monos right now that I am using with the Luxman C900U pre. I love the combo but would like to add the M900u sometime in the future after a demo. I think the Ref 10 and Dag M400 monos could be an awesome combo despite conventional wisdom saying the D'Agostino Momentum preamp is the one to get.
I’d say You should stick to luxman amp and pre amp together. The 900u sound best when used together.
My advice....Lower the volumes you are listening at otherwise your probably going to get TINNITUS....a constant ringing in your ear (or ears) that sounds like a smoke alarm going off in your head 24/7. There is no cure for this. Might want to do a little research....this goes for everybody that reads this page that listens at high volumes. Becoming Deaf isnt the only problem you can have with your ears. Much like your Back...you only get 1 crack at taking care of your hearing. Once you mess it up there is no return. I got this affliction in January...I will never be able to enjoy music the same way again. Never even heard of this condition before it happened to me. Dont take your ears for granted. Now back to our regular programming.
As a long-time Owner of Wilson Audio Speakers, my advice is to take your time and to be patient in setting them up, 1/2 inch moves make a difference, keep the Tweeters 9' > 10' apart, sit at a distance of no more than 1.10 > 1.20 : 1, stay clear of the side walls and not too close to the front wall - they like to be pulled-out into the room; start with a toe-in where you could barley see the inside of the Bass Cabinets, then toe-out in 1/4 inch increments, if needed. Once they are locked-in you will know it. Use Wilson Audio's distance scale to set the angle of the Heads, their spec is close to dead-on. Remember to Level the Bass Cabinets before you mount the Heads.
My Sasha 2s sound amazing in my 20' x 26' Room, powered by Devialet Expert 400 Mono-Blocks. I also considered Wilson Audio Alexia, but found the Sasha 2s bass response to be a better fit for my room - I have no problem in taming the Sasha 2s powerful bass performance - with no booming or overhang, just deep, tight bass; the Alexia wouldn't have been so easy, plus the mids & highs of these two models sound similar, with the advantage going to the newer Sasha 2 over the older Alexia 1.
I am very familiar with the Revel Salon 2; the Sasha 2 will outperform them, if they are set-up correctly. Don't hesitate to call Wilson Audio for assistance. Good luck.
Yes, I have been told a lot of people are living through me in terms of audio gear. I am just happy to be able to do this and have a good network to do business with.
Wilson audio Sasha 2 is in the house... salon 2s, Martin Logan 13a, Wilson Sasha 2 are all standing next to each other in my living room... no plan to listen to anything until Saturday night or Sunday. Things are going to get really interesting
@whitecamaross I am not so sure that they are more the most difficult of all speakers to set up. However, just like most speakers they will shine the best when placed in good position. I would definitely recommend to review the manual which discusses the “zone of neutrality” to help you get the best out of the placement of the speakers. I did have a dealer set up my previous set of Wilson’s and the process was educational.
whitecamaross, While you're experimenting with speakers, why not try one of the upper end horn speakers. If I read between the lines correctly, you value dynamics and a live feel. I believe a good horn speaker would really open your eyes and make some of the alternatives sound pale. I think that it should be a part of your investigation for your own sake.
I am doing the set up myself and I understand Wilson is the easiest speaker to screw up if you don’t set them up right. I said it before, I wasn’t impressed by the Alexia 1 and Alexia 2 but they also had music that I’m not familiar with. I have an itch to try a Wilson audio speaker and I will do so because i need to get it out of my system. If I end up not liking their sound signature after trying to set them up for a few weeks and using all of my different set ups, then I’ll move them. I have my salons in the living room but nothing is plugged in yet. It’s a new room as well so it’s an entire new set up with new room, speakers and Front end. For me to keep the Wilsons they will have to blow away my salons and 13a. I won’t hang on to them if they just fail to impress me here. That said, Let’s remember I’ve got 2 serious set ups and so maybe the Wilsons will impress here. I’ve already heard from several friends who are saying I’ll part ways with the Wilsons in 2 weeks because they know I love the Logan’s and they are nothing like Panels. They said the only thing they do better is that they have great bass and that’s about it. If I sell the Wilsons, my next speaker could be a paradigm persona, Magico, etc.
I know you had a pair of Sonus Faber Il Cremonese in the past. I had a choice between the Wilson Alexia 1 or the new Sonus Faber Amati Tradition Homage. I felt the Wilson speakers were great but fatiguing. I had three people that thought the sound was more concert like with the Sonus Fabers. I will be interested to hear your viewpoints on the Sasha's. Everyone has different levels of expectations and desires.
As you said , the Bel Canto black preamplifier asc1 chassis is replacing the REF10... And is competing equally with it...
Did you see a pic of the guts of the asc1 black preamp.... Compared to the REF10....
Preamplifiers have evolved, just like dacs. Some rare brands and audiophiles acknowledges this , some other keep snobing that fact with ref10, kxr 20, pass x, etc. I rest my case.
The black system version 2 which is what I own is actually 55k. It went up 5k. With this set up, you don’t need any amps, preamps, dacs, renderer, or expensive balanced cables to connect your preamp to the amp. You can sell of the above. I also just bought a second Hegel h30 so I will be using Hegel h30s in monoblock configuration which would put out 1,100 watts into 8 ohms and 2,000 into 4ohms each. The goal is to finally hear these amps in mono and to also see if perhaps two hegels in mono mode with the arc ref10 will actually best the Belcanto black. Although reviewers say the h30 in mono is no good, I’m pretty much saying screw whatever the hell they said. I’m gonna my own damn experimentation and report back.
Yes the three piece BC Black system is $50K. To be fair though it is effectively replacing the $30K ARC Ref 10 and power amp of choice. Not that I'm endorsing it, just that the price is not out of line with other combos being considered.
Just the fact that the Bel Canto Black or the best Devialet all in one rig, is competing with the pre+amps of this caliber prooves my point all along...
...wich is that you don t need a 30k REF10 huge two box design with tubes inserted in the Bel Canto Black pieces to reproduce the best sound... so please give the Mcintosh latest full rig owners a break when saying it s not in the same league as the rest of ultra high end stuff.
The prefered combination will depend a lot on one's sound concept.
Personally, I value linearity, harmonic exposure, and minimization of intermodulative artifacts... That is those thingies that make chords on bowed high strings sound jarring.
I suspect that over the four combinations, I would end up prefering
1. Belcanto black system
However, if someone prefered a slightly more romantic rendition, with a slight and graceful emphasis over the mid low bass, the second combo might be his choice:
I wow wow wow. Everyone seems to be thinking the pass/ arc is going to best the black system and the other amps. I believe from a reputation standpoint that would make sense because those 2 have plenty of it. However, I will be honest and say I have a gut feeling the Hegel /arc will surprise as well.
Alright guys, the second ref 10 has just arrived. I wanted to throw a question out there and see what everyone’s opinion is. I am supposed to get the Wilson audios this Wednesday so I want to ask you all which set up do you think will win when powering Wilson Sasha 2s? 1. Belcanto black system 2. Ref10 pass labs 350.8 3. Ref 10 Hegel h30 4. Ref 10 simaudio 860a let me hear your opinions !
Techno, if you like McIntosh then more power to you. Some people gotta love Burger King over five guys and that’s totally fine. At the end of the day, it’s your money and you can do as you wish. The luxman 900 is a diamond though. McIntosh should take some notes and figure what luxman does to sound so amazing.
I've listened to McIntosh several times within the last year. To my ears McIntosh has a colored sound. In comparison to Bricasti, Jeff Rowland, Absolare, PS Audio, and Bryston the McIntosh was always my least favorite.
Hi Techno, granted, my last listening of McIntosh might be some 4 years ago.... I do like to keep an open mind: next time I attend RMAF, I will definitely visit once again the McIntosh suite, and give Mac electronics a new long listen.... It would be wonderful if the Mac house sound has significantly evolved since those middling days.
guido, McIntosh gear is not the same as it was 10 years ago. They are offering much more for your money these days, incredible value. They have not followed the Ayre, Arc and Pass insane prices raise. And that comes from someone with a Luxman M-900 Ultimate sitting in the living room, one of the best ss amp of the moment at any price.
It's quite clear to most that reviews (or anything you read for that matter) professional or not should be taken with a grain of salt and yet it seems that you take reviews read elsewhere as gospel, as in "I read here and here that this or that piece of equipment is not as good as you say". I'm just curious as to the logic behind this, if there is any.
Hmmm... Techno, I listen to music at acoustic concert levels -- that means non-amplified concerts, ranging from chamber, lieds, choral, and full orchestra.... In case you wondered, my ears are just fine.
I have auditioned the MCIntosh suite at length several years at RMAF.... Regretably, I always found it to be middling and wanting.
It's the kind of sound that I remember in my uncle's stereo, sporting MCIntosh electronics of course, during the early 60s.... stuffy and subtly uninvolving.
But I am delighted that you enjoy the Mac tembre... It takes all kinds to keep this industry alive, isn't it?!
