P02/D02 is not just a significant step up from P03/D03...it might be preferred over P01/D01...probably P01/D01 needs updating soon...
I've heard P01/D05 and very impressed with it, absolutely natural and detailed, bass and body is quite something! My X03SE sounded thin on mids, lacks in details, highs sounded bright on complex music...X03SE is no comparison to P01/D05. My system and on the system i heard is very similar, the difference was huge!!
I recently wrote to Esoteric, asking for comparison between P01/D01 and P01/D02...this was their reply:
"The D-02 is more versatile with the 8 AKM DACs that do both DSD and PCM decoding. The D-01 only decodes in PCM so it converts the SACD data to PCM before decoding. I believe the D-02 sounds better. I also think if you have a D-02, the P-02 would be a better transport than the P-01 unless you want to do multi-channel."
