The Best RVG Recording You Never Heard Of

Everyone knows all of the Blue Notes, Savoys, Prestiges that Rudy Van Gelder engineered. I found one the other day thats much later which has really great sound quality so I thought I'd share. Charlie Rouse's Social Call, featuring Red Rodney on Uptown Records. This is a 1984 date that also features Albert Dailey on piano, Cecil McBee on Bass and Kenny Washington on drums. Its pretty much a straight ahead bop date with excellent playing by Rouse and Rodney. The recording is very naturally spaced (no hard panning the instruments)and the record has very deep bass. Even the piano, typically an RVG weakness - sounds passibly good. Definately one to check out if you dig this kind of jazz.
