What makes you build a system around an amplifier?

Serious question. I almost always care about the room and speakers first, then build around that. However, this is not the only way to do things.

If you have ever insisted on keeping your amplifier, but were willing to change everything else around it, please let us know why. What made an amp so outstanding in your mind that it was worth making it your center piece. Imaging? slam?

Be specific about the amp and speakers or other gear that you shuffled through.

Thanks!

OP--The three amps that will likely stick around, even as speakers may change are Cary CAD211fe, Wall Audio m50 PSETs, and, like Wolf, an Inspire SEP HO.  The Carys sing to me, have enough beef to be flexible with speakers, and are too freaking heavy and PITA to think about getting rid of.  The Walls are just lovely, bring enough SET power to be flexible, can double as space heaters, and, while I'm still a SET noob, provide enough of "that" sound while limiting the negatives.  The Inspire---it sounds great, is a fantastic value, imo, and I don't think I'd get enough for it to be worth selling.

But, some speakers will probably stick around, too.  Canton Reference 1 and, although a fairly recent acquisition, Spendor s3/5r2.
