Your One "Go To" Recording

What is the one recording you reach for when you can't decide what to play? The one CD or album that will satisfy your need for music when you don't have anything in particular in mind?

Mine is Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue".

Any format. Any genre.

But...only one choice!
tvad
Tvad, did you not say "one"? Onhwy61 is not paying attention.

Yea, yea, I already gently busted him on it, but I understand it's hard to narrow these things down to one choice. Yet, I believe the "one only" rule leads to some interesting choices.

As a Talking Heads lover, I'm going to check out the Tom Tom Club disc.
Obviously things change all the time, but my current fave is "Vampire" from Sinaed O'Connor's "Lay Down Your Arms" - her tribute to reggae. While it's not a fantastic recording in the normal audiophile mode (since it's multi-tracked and a little compressed) there is her wonderful voice and a super-strong bottom end from Sly and Robbie.

I played this in a few rooms at CES and I thought the Wilson Maxx2's in the BAT room were the one speaker that really nailed this.

Regards,
Damn you, Onhwy61! (I say ala John Stewart...with a smile on my face).

Which one from your list would you choose?

Thank you all for your participation. What's fascinating to me is that I own almost none of the recordings mentioned, and yet they are your "Go To" albums. It seems I need to start adding to my music collection!
Great post!

This question is the reason why I went to a hard disk playback setup. A playlist is such a better answer than just a single record. My fall back playlists are sorted by genre (blues, pop, rock, etc.) with each song rated 4 stars or better. Each list contains at least 500 songs and it's set to random play. Here's the most ten recent songs played from the Jazz Vocal playlist:

They Can't Take That Away From Me - Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong/Our Love Is Here To Stay: Ella & Louis Sing Gershwin

Let's Call The Whole Thing Off - Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong/Our Love Is Here To Stay: Ella & Louis Sing Gershwin

It Was A Very Good Year - Frank Sinatra/Sinatra At The Sands

Fools Rush In - Frank Sinatra/Nice And Easy

I'm Glad There Is You - Sarah Vaughan/Jazz 'Round Midnight

All Of Me - Lester Young w/ Billie Holiday/Lester Young Story: Afternoon Of A Basie-Ite

My Funny Valentine - Luqman Hamza/With This Voice

All Of Me - Billie Holiday & Lester Young/Complete Billie Holiday-Lester Young 1937-1946

Rose of the Rio Grande/St. Louis Blues - Duke Ellington/Duke 1940 Live From the Crystal Ballroom In Fargo, N.D.

September Song - Sarah Vaughan/Sarah Vaughan
The Tom Tom Clubs first album. Not only is it a joy to listen to but I also use it as my reference disc.
Placido Domingo ... "Verdi Arias & Duets" on EMI Great Artists.

Regards, Rich
Camel "A Nod and a Wink"

it's really hard to pick one cause it changes . . . but since a nod and a wink came out, I'd say this is my primary go-to.
Diana Krall "Love Scenes." The bass by Christian McBride is deep, musical and incredible. First track,"All or Nothing At All." Eleventh track,"Love Is." And others.
John
Moonlight Serenade by Ray Brown and Laurindo Almeida. Beautiful music that is well recorded.
Folks, this is not a "desert island" thread. You can only play one disc or LP at a time...so you gotsa choose just one.

I'd probably grab Patti Griffin's "1000 Kisses"...or maybe Kelly Joe Phelps, "Shine-eye'd Mister Zen". Oh shit, I fucked up didn't I? OK, I'll take Patti...NO, NO...wait a minute, no, I'll take Kelly Joe....or wait, what about Tom Waits!!? Screw-it, I'll just grab my iPod!

Marco
Right now it's Nanci Griffith's "Other Voices, Too (A Trip Back To Bountiful)" for me.
TVAD since "kind of blue" has been chosen, i'll choose NEIL YOUNG "UNPLUGGED". The acoustical versions of some of his older mateial really hits the spot for me. "The old laughing lady", as one, has so much more melody and soul then the original studio version. Then there is "hurricane". "mr. soul" etc.
Try you will not be disappointed!

Thanks for the two suggestions though, Lvk47. Which do you play when you can only play just one?
Dhafer Youssef. 11-08-03 amsterdam,holland 2d A ELECTRIC SUFI w/ AARSET, ARNISEN, ILG
a show I acquired in a trade.great sound and I never get tired of listening to it.The man is amazing.
I know you said 1 BUT
CODONA [ don cherry,colin walcott,nana vasconcellos ]
can't live without both...sorry
Does the one only rule apply if the thread causes schizophrenia?
Mahavishnu Orchestra- Inner Mounting Flame. I know it's recorded lousy (especially on cd), but it's got huge inspired adrenal and brainbox combustion power. Could be a good thing that most people don't get it... those riffs might kill em'.
Patricia Barber "Nightclub"
Hands down my "go to recording" I have it on CD and on Vinyl...Track 7 is a great system check for base responce and clarity, you know you have it when you can hear his fingers slide on the strings, I can just imagine the rozen flying on stage.
