Power Strip vs. Line Conditioner
The previous posts said it well. If you need conditioning--it almost always helps things--go that route. The only area you need to be careful with conditioning is on power amps, even ones that are made for high current I have found frequently degr...
Dipole surrounds Vs. Direct radiating
My first choice is direct radiating behind the listener (45 degrees off axis), but it sounds like that's not an option for you. Unfortunately, it wasn't an option for me either in my current room. I had to go with ceiling mounts directly above the...
Cardas Golden VS AQ Diamondx3. anybody?
I have compared the Golden Cross to the Diamond. I prefered the Diamond, but almost all of my system is Audioquest. The Golden Cross was a little less detailed, but not dramatically--in some systems it might be prefered. Both of these cables image...
Help: Something wrong to my amp???
Are you using balanced cables? If so it is possible that one of the hot leads has a short (most likely at the conector and easy to repair). This way you get some signal--but only half and the soundstage shifts away from the problem cable. Do as no...
b w / martin logan / definitive
Steve--I think you are well on your way to a good system. I agree with most of the posts, and would say the DT is best for HT, the Martin Logan perhaps for music (I'm biased--I own ML speakers and love them), but for both the B&W fits the bill...
Amazing Solo Piano Recordings
I agree with the Oxnard Sessions--both volumes are very good. But the two best I own in terms of sound quality are Shefield D2D "the name is Machovich". This is not the greatest performance--but sound quality is fantastic. The other is Ito Ema pla...
Speaker punishing bass
Pomp and Pipes on Reference Recordings and Patriot Games soundtrack.
Dodson MKll D, Levinson 360S, dCS Delius
Follow-up to Garfish: I went from a model two to the 36 (not nearly as good as the 360s) and found it to not only have much better frequency range (particularly bass), but much better imaging--the whole soundstage was much more coherent. JTinn: No...
What makes a speaker thousands more...
I agree with Rcprince--I was only considering speakers and main electronics (not power conditioning--which might also be in the margin stratosphere).
What makes a speaker thousands more...
Jeff's post is excellent. Speakers are the highest margin items in this industry. For a manufacturer to maintain R&D, marketing, sales and distribution they must make 50% gross margin, but most will make more. Many speaker lines carry 60% marg...
Buying a used Pre-amp...Advice needed
I bought a preminence one for about that--maybe a little less. It's passive, so there are some considerations there--passive won't work in all systems (there is a thread on passive vs active pre amps). For the money, I've been very happy with it.
Who makes the drivers?
Most companies do not make their own drivers. There are some, mostly high end companies, that do make their own drivers, such as Theil and Dynaudio. The ones that contract out drivers, generally write the specs for the drivers they need, then try ...
Tuning speaker / room response?
Njonker, is it possible for you to show the graph of your room before treatment with the toolbox. I've been intrigued by this product, and was wondering just how different the results were.
I have a tube amp question?????
You certainly aren't going to rock the house with this amp, but if that was your interest--you probably wouldn't be looking at this amp anyway. If you are in a moderate sized room and listen reasonably close (less than 10 feet--I don't know if you...
Tube Amp for Martin Logan SL3 3
To clarify my previous post (I figured I would get some disagreement--but that's okay--I don't feel there really are any absolutes in audio (except don't run your Class A amplifier in a full bathtub). Anyway, I do own Martin Logan's, they are mono...
