I think you're hearing the crossover getting in then way late at night. Single Driver Loudspeakers are the way to go. Of course, I'm prejudiced (being a a Single Driver Loudspeaker guy).I think you are going to find out 6 wpc isn't enough to drive...

Crossovers should also be considered when looking at tube amps. I'm unfamiliar with the LS-6, but in general, first order crossovers are recommended for most tube Wild impedance swings are also a concern with tube amps and you may be disappointed ... 
Power Cables which take the soundstage back
You may be better off installing dedicated line. But I agree with Macdadtexas. "Buy better upstream gear with your money, or better speakers." Or software.

You're right, it can't be good for your hearing. My advice would be to see a good audiologist to determine what's going on.
