dire straits -what to buy
the best dire straits recordings in my collection are on japanese vinyl, with the exception of "making movies" that is even better on canadian half-speed. if you're patient, you can find most of the japanese pressings on ebay. if you're not planni...
cd players with volume control
jim: i can assure you that the volume control on the accuphase dp-75v does not "drop bits." i don't own the unit but one of my good friends does. (i have owned the dp-75, which i ran directly with great sucess.) he thoroughly researched this issue...
If you knew then, what you know now...
if i had to do it all over again, i'd be born rich, living my life as a trust fund baby and ignoring the hoi poloi on this most pedestrian of audio sites; should I, quite unlikely, find it amusing to listen in on your rf static, i'd have my secret...
cd players with volume control
a conspicuous model by its absence thus far: the accuphase 75v. digital volume control that will not degrade the sonics by rolling off high and/or low end at varying output levels, as will the "analogue" pots. you can't appreciate the best unless ...

Is my Salesman telling the Truth?
CORRECTED POST3chihuahuas: if you believed "your sales guy" was spoutin' bull dung, why didn't you tell him? i find it fascinating that so few consumers - of damn near anything - are willing to confront uppity salespersons, even politely and diplo...

Fly in the SACD Ointment?
i've already replicated in redbook cd format most of my favorite lp's. for the nonce, i've no plans to do the same with sacd, should the choice ever become real. i waited almost 3 years after the introduction of the cd format to buy my first playe...
Hello? ? ? ? Is Anybody Home ?? ?
cw: i put your question to my older son, who has the same notebook as yours (he is, BTW, a second generation audiophile, as well). his first concern with your proposed setup is power consumption. unless your notebook is running on an ac adapter, y...
How much does your system retail for?
i was too embarrased to post when i first saw this thread. i'm now happy to report that my audio-only system is quite modest, coming in at only 45.51% of albertporter's.- kelly
Virtual system revisited
uhmm, jd, there is a separate virtual sytems section on this site to which many have already contributed. _kelly
What causes listener fatique? cure?
i've found that almost anything in a system can cause listener fatigue. in my current setup, it took a tradeout of speaker cables to remove the last vestige of harshness that kept me from hours' long listening pleasure. .....kelly
Cryogenic Tempering
albertporter: when cryogenically treating a phono cartridge do you remove the body? does it make a difference of what the body is made? what was the sonic effect on the cartridge? TIA. -kelly
BEST brand for Classical Recordings?
while not offering much "mainstream" music, lyrita recorded some of the most spectacular classical lp's ever. i find harmonia mundi and bis to offer consistently excellent classical cd's, also on the more obscure side. _kelly
California Brownouts and equipment
rosstaman: you might want to review the thread titled "California electrical shortage audio," that began on 02/15/01. It should answer at least some of your questions. -kelly
