Alignment Snafu? Or?
Ted,Correct assumption.Mark,Null points at 57.9/114.6 aren't necessary, and probably not optimal unless you have many LPs with very wide lead-in grooves (like 1/2" wide) and music cut right up to the label. Not very likely, so I don't understand w...
setting azimuth on VPI turntables
Radrog, Didn't you mean, "Get a BAD cartridge and forget all the nonsense"? ;-)The more resolving the cartridge the more it responds to changes in azimuth and other setup parameters. Low resolution cartridges do mask the effects of many adjustment...
Alignment Snafu? Or?
Ted,Forgot to mention. With an OL at 222m, aligning a cartridge at the Baerwald points will leave it slightly angled (inward) in the headshell. That's okay - as long as the stylus is tracing the arc and aligned on the grids.
Alignment Snafu? Or?
Ted,You're more likely to be able to align a cartridge at the Baerwald points on an OL arm if you mount the arm somewhat closer than the specified 223mm. The problem with 223mm is that, (i) Rega/OL arms were not designed for Baerwald and, (ii) at ...
Alignment Snafu? Or?
Mark,Another suggestion: try installing your cartridge without the finger lift. The extra hardware and material boundaries make your cartridge less stable in the headshell and alter the resonance behavior of the cart/arm. I can't guarantee this ec...
Expressimo RB 250 mistracking issue
Zerodust and a dry brush are not adequate for long term stylus cleaning. Many of the cartridges I've rehabilitated, as discussed above, were maintained using exactly that.Do a search here or on Vinyl Asylum for "Magic Eraser" or click "Threads" be...
What do defective phono tubes sound like?
Keep your chin up SirS. Friday night our system sounded terrible. No life, no snap, just dull, dull, dull. I gave up and we went out for dinner. Yesterday I realized I'd moved VTF in the wrong direction. Doh! When I fixed that the music all came t...
What do defective phono tubes sound like?
SirSpeedy,Any chance it's mistracking? (I know you'd have recognized that, but thought I'd cover all the bases.)Diagnostic question: do these pops happen in both channels or just one? I'd put a small wager on a loose connection at the cartridge pi...
Expressimo RB 250 mistracking issue
Mistracking is just a skip that didn't quite make the jump into the next groove. We're talking about differences in degree, not in kind, so any possible explanations apply to both. I haven't had a Rega style arm for several years (and never had th...
Expressimo RB 250 mistracking issue
Problems like the one described by Maktheknife happen with some frequency on certain Rega arms. I've seen several posts like his over the years. The fact that yours is mistracking on only the most challenging LP's may simply indicate that the wire ...
Any idea what this goo is on my record?
The best treatment I've found for removing old mold release chemistries (if that's what it is) is not steaming but enzyme-based record cleaning fluids. Buggtussel Vinyl-Zyme is pretty good. AIVS Enzymatic is better. Others like Walker Prelude, whi...
Loricraft thread type
Last year we went to 4 local fabric shops trying to find the Gudebrod thread or the equivalent. No luck, it's not retailed in our neck of the woods. Most thread that's thin enough is cotton, not a good choice. We eventually googled it and found an ...
Isolation and Monster Power conditioner
We use an Exact Power EP-15A to maintain level voltage, much as Jsmoller does. Isolation devices beneath that make a clearly audible difference (improvement) in our system. I suspect this is because the EP contains a large transformer. Every devic...
Schroeder Model 2 for Technics + Ortofon 2M Black
Dsa,I can't guess how well your cart will mate up with a Model 2, and frankly neither can anyone who hasn't actually heard them paired together. The numbers do not tell that story, they can only warn of a gross mismatch, which this probably wouldn...
How critical is the exact placement of the tonearm
Swampwalker pointed out the importance of Eyeball-to-Stylus distance, which is critical but often, umm, overlooked! Like him, I wear progressive lenses. Unlike him, I am quite nearsighted. Being able to see even the smallest styli from an E2S of 5...
