Tri-Planar with no anti-skate?
Paul,Glad to see you're enjoying this discovery. I did this a year or two ago and shared the results here. Several other owners confirmed what you're now hearing. Depending on the cartridge, the LP and the tracking conditions, the weight of the ba...
What determines the volume of a Turntable?
What determines the volume of a Turntable? It's tempting to say, "Dunk it in a bathtub like Archimedes", but I won't. ;-)1. Cartridge output2. Phono stage gain3. Line stage gain4. Amplifier gain5. Speaker sensitivityThese are the major factors affe...
Difference between Kuzma and ZYX
Piedpiper is correct. Kuzma's new sourcing arrangement is with ZYX, effective early this year. Before that they did rebadge Shelters, as Rauliruegas said.Kuzma does not have access to the UNIverse or Atmos, so whatever models they offer are presum...
Cartridges & Sensitivity to VTF
Stringreen,We first used O-rings to fine tune VTF on an OL Silver. Of course they'd work on any arm with an exposed length of end stub behind the counterweight. Just set your c/w for the maximum downforce you're likely to want, then reduce in incr...
Cartridges & Sensitivity to VTF
Every MC I've used long enough to play with VTF has responded audibly to changes of .02-.04g, less in some cases. That includes Denon 103/103R, Ortofon Jubilee, Shelter 901, seven different ZYX models and probably some others. I don't remember any...
I envy what you know, not what you have
We wouldn't have gotten back into vinyl, acquired so much great music, gear and knowledge (or spent so much money!) without the encouragement, enthusiasm and open helpfulness of regular contributors to this forum. First among those (for us) was Tw...
How to measure crosstalk
Pryso,You have to be in the sweet spot to fine tune azimuth by ear. That's the only place you can hear your sytem's L/R imaging at its best. Don't use test tones to set azimuth by ear. They wouldn't help. Use music, preferably higher pitched instr...
How to measure crosstalk
Sorry for the inaccurate term. My electronics skills are easily a match for yours, Pryso. ;-)At least I knew what I meant, and fortunately Rene did too!DougP.S. Paul and I are among those annoying guys that Tim mentioned in his excellent post. Aft...
Q: Playing empty/last groove ?
Clean your stylus well to remove the layer of burnished-on vinyl particles and crud. It's there - guaranteed. Use something stronger/more abrasive than a dry brush, goop or gel. Search for "magic eraser" if you need a cheap and effective idea or u...
Strange Tonearm Tweak. Long
There's a picture right on Twl's system page.
What could be wrong?
The old toothpick trick works perfectly. It prevents you from squeezing the clip too much and flattening it out. A round wooden toothpick works best, just the shape you want and it "gives" a little.Don't use needlenose pliers unless you also use a...
VPI RCM 17 F trouble, very urgent NEED HELP......
Thanks for the update. Did it really take nearly 3 months?
Record Cleaning Machine Fluid
Another vote for the revised AIVS solutions. Our experience parallels Markd51's and Musicamaniac's exactly. Removing the residue Musicmaniac referred to has literally been the equivalent of a full component upgrade. Our records were clean and sile...
How to measure crosstalk
Great explanation by Tim. One addition: you need a notch filter to reduce frequencies above/below the test tone. Otherwise, at the tiny levels we're trying to adjust for, background surface noise from the vinyl will swamp the results at the meter....
Record Cleaning Machine Fluid
I've never heard of any commercially marketed record cleaning fluid actually damaging a vinyl LP. (Alcohol will damage many 78's, but that's another story.)Playing uncleaned records can damage them and has done so in my own experience; and once da...
