Lead shot questions
Distortion...Suggestion. Turn the speakers upsidedown to fill them. CO2 "pours" like a liquid, and if you go slow you will get a good fill. If the port plugs are tight and not permiable the CO2 will hardly leak ar all. (It will stay in an open dis...
Lead shot questions
Putting metal weights inside a speaker enclosure is obviously a misunderstanding of the concept of weighting down the enclosure by external loading. But, it brings to mind an idea that I have been kicking around for a while, but never got to try. ...
Douglas Self on Negative feedback and distortion
As a test design engineer (now happily retired)I have a different understanding of the purpose of specs. Performance of the equipment, we all agree, is determined by its design. A prototype is built and its performance is good. Now we want to put ...

Sean...."there are loop-holes to every generalization" is one.

Audioengr...You may be clever enough to design "an amp that has bandwidth to 1 MHz, but has lousy step reponse (overdamped). " But why would you, or anyone else, do that. In practice there is correllation.
Douglas Self on Negative feedback and distortion
Step response can tell you everything you need to know about an amplifier, but criteria are not well defined. From what points do you measure rise time? 10 percent to 90 percent of max amplitude? How many overshoots? How big does the overshoot hav...
How Much Time do You Surf on Audiogon?
It depends on whether I have anything useful to be doing.
Can Rock-N-Roll have great sound quality?
Why bother?
Rotel RSX-1056 or Denon 3805
I like my Rotel 1066.
Differences between small vs. large mid driver
Trelja...I read Andy2 comment to be saying that expensive systems have midrange drivers (suitably small) whereas less expensive speakers are 2-way.I think that a 6.5 inch driver will have some problems in the 1500 to 3000 Hz range. (Check Nighthaw...
Differences between small vs. large mid driver
Trelja...The system you describe can cross over to the "Midrange" driver at 200 Hz because it is a 6.5 inch ubit, which I would not describe as a midrange driver. I would describe the system as a 8 inch subwoofer that can be crossed over at 200 Hz...
Home brew cleaning solution
Vodka. Gin leaves a juniper oil residue.
Voltage conversion from 220V to 110V.
A schoolmate of mine nearly killed himself (really) with a Heathkit Geiger counter. Although the construction manual warned about the high voltages he figured "four D cells...how dangerous can it be?" Well those D cells fed a chopper and voltage s...
Differences between small vs. large mid driver
The midrange driver range that I suggested (600 to 3000) is based on what I have seen done in three way speakers. I think that Nighthawk agreed with me, and provided all the details. If you suggest that a woofer is good to 2500Hz, what's wrong with...
How do YOU find the hole?
Sean...I know that I have seen writeups on all the angles and forces involved with a pivoting arm. In fact a lecture I went to about how to set up a pivoting arm is what convinced me to go to linear tracking. It is impossible to get everything rig...
