any fixes for impedance mismatch
Ground the 2nd XLR pin as Eldartford suggests and use the balanced input. However, as your bass energy is there, you don't as if you're not suffering from energy losses, anyway.
recommended redbook classics
I sugest you eschew the "beautifully recorded" requirement and go for the musical performance.Of course each has his or her own favourite, "best" performance. Here are some ideas. For Beethoven look for Furtwangler /Berliner or Wiener. There is als...
Cable question CAT JL2 + Ultimate + Avalon
Between Ultimate & (my) amps I used N-Valhalla and diy asymmetric made out of cooper, twisted conductors (not touching). Both to good effect, the Nordost offered better electrical "transmission".Between JL2 & spkrs I used paralleled copper...

Thanks for the recomm, Eldartford. I actually have the older performance & like it a lot!
the 4 ohm rating
High current design clock radio ("HCDC"), no doubt...:) Single mono (also available in dual & multi-mono) Makes all the difference:) Cheers
Zobel network
Alfredo, use the cheapest caps to determine the optimum value. Since you're nearly (already?) there, one way of "burning in" caps is to charge and discharge them (outside the circuit of course) with ever increasing voltage until you reach ~90% the...
klipsch speakers,be honest
Sean, you are referring to the K-horns I suppose? I'd be interested in any refs you have regarding these moifications... Cheers
Tips for gradual upgrade
I readily subscribe to Goinbroke's suggestions: optimise what you have, PARTICULARLY placement of spkrs in the room. A contact enhancer is useful in helping "ohmic" contact BUT keep in mind that precious metals migrate so eventually the silver con...

The best Oistrakh Tchaikovski must be a late 60s early 70s (he died in 74 I think) live recording. It was made on his birthday, recorded by Melodiya. I have an old LP, but I'm sure there is a cd version out there, somewhere...
Crossover definition
I don't think that Butterworth is a crossover. Rather it's a filter A crossover IS a filter. As you know, the xover is there to divide frequencies between drivers through attenuation (dependng upon how strong -- the slope or order -- that attenuat...
The problem with the music
...has the recording industry ever been interested in, or rather, concerned about, making (audiophile) quality recordings...Oh yes. Already in the '60s companies were making concerted efforts to improve the qualty of their recordings. This isnot t...
Advice on choosing speakers
One brand you might go for is Genesis. They offer biamped models (you buy the spkrs with a subwoof amp included) and offer reasonable detail and low end attack. As some of their models retail for ~12-15k, they shoudl be well within your budget used.
Speaker design myths revealed
Golix: differences basically as above, in my 1st answer to your post. It dawns on me (belatedly) that what you read in the handbook probably refers to the fact that the closed box is an approximation of an IB -- since it's quite impractical to ins...
What's wrong with classical music on vinyl?
El, the cartridges I mentioned (sorry about the Ortofons) related only to channel separation -- not sound. Regarding sonics, I like Allaerts, the bigger (&expensive) Clearaudio & the two common Shelters. I used to use a VdHul MC2 and a Gra...
What's wrong with classical music on vinyl?
El -- re, cartridges: Clearaudio Discovery & up, the VdHul Grasshoper & up, the bigger Grados, the upmarket Lyras, the bigger Ortofons, most (all?) of the Allaerts... This is really not an exhaustive list, are you actually interested in th...
