Preamp has too much gain
The electronics should be run at the highest possible gain, at a given supply voltage, where feasible.I don't understand. How would you lower the gain of a preamp without major reconstruction? THD comes from operating an active device in a non-lin...
Preamp has too much gain
One of the few things that designers will agree upon is that the closer you operate to maximum volume then the better the sound. Volume controls always take away. The ideal system would have an overall gain (source + preamp + power amp + speaker e...
Your experience:a cdp that gets best of lesser cds
OK, I think we need some clarification here. Do you seek a single player that can do everything (make everything sound good) or an additional player or another piece of hardware than can compensate for bad recordings? If it is the former then you s...
Preamp has too much gain
I have a Consonance Reference 1.1 preamp that has too much gain. I'm assuming by this you mean it is too loud with the volume barely turned up, but your assessment of the problem is not correct since you never use the gain that the preamp has. The...
Your experience:a cdp that gets best of lesser cds
Tvad is correct, and a player that colors the sound and makes bad recordings sound better will good recordings sound worse. I think you should be looking for an equalizer you can apply to the bad recordings, not a CD player
Want custom horn speakers : who best builder ?
Jeffrey Jackson can build you whatever you want and killer electronics to go with it.His website is not up to date with his latest speaker designs but horns are his passion and everything I've heard is wonderful.
Balanced in phono stages preamp?
Interesting. So the voltage on the grids is slightly different and the coil of the cartridge is hooked across the grids? Doesn't this put some DC current through the coil?
Balanced in phono stages preamp?
That still doesn't explain how you can establish bias with 2 floating supplies like you claimed earlier. I say you can't.I’ll say it again. The cathodes are tied to a common point; there must be a DC path from grid to cathode to establish bias so ...
Balanced in phono stages preamp?
if I provide two independent floating bias supplies for the input of the preamp, I don't have to have the grid resistors go to a common point. Perhaps I have no imagination but I don't see how that can work. Everything still has to have a common r...
Best Miles Davis Mono LPs to Start a Collection
I see, good plan. As for mono, I have no problem with that. What many of us try to achieve with our stereos; pinpoint imaging, width and depth of soudstage, etc. simply does not exist with most live performances. You also have a ton of tremendous ...
glass shelves under components?
There are very few absolutes when it comes to shelves, footers, etc. It is very system dependent. Ask enough people and you will get as many answers as there are possible shelving systems. You get "Glass would be a worse case scenero" but Naim make...
Best Miles Davis Mono LPs to Start a Collection
I have to ask, why mono only? And why are you collecting vinyl for your wife when she has only CDs and you have only a turntable?Start here for an excellent summary of his work. The first stereo records were in 1958. I believe Porgy and Bess was th...
problems with 24 bit cd players
i am looking for an 18 or 16 bit player. i apologize for unnecessary words.Ok, I give up since you can't seem to grasp the concept. I am not railing against redundancy, I am railing against something that is impossible.16 bits is the native format...
problems with 24 bit cd players
i am looking for a non upsampling less than 24 bit cd playerDo my other posts not show up? Why do you keep saying that? That statement makes no sense. If it is non upsampling and non oversampling IT IS 16 BITS !!!!!! Period. end of story. If it ha...
problems with 24 bit cd players
Greg, the digital to analog conversion is done with an intergrated circuit. Digital goes into the chip and an analog signal comes out. It is all done inside the chip.digital signal in ------ chip -------- analog outputYou can add tubes at that poi...
