| Black marks on output tubes? Do you mean inside the glass? If so it is called a getter. It is an element that is purposely overheated by applying current to it after the tube is made. It's job is to burn up and while doing so get whatever oxygen is left inside the tube. | |
| Help with what's wrong with my 300b amp? s23chang is correct unless they used a current source for the filaments, in which case you won't measure 5V unless the tubes are in circuit. Even if there is a loose connection, that would not explain why it tripped the breaker. I sent a copy of t... | |
| Latest iPod Configuration -- Any New Hope? Which Etymotics do you have? The ER-4 is not designed to be driven by sources with limited drive capabilities such as the I-pod, the ER-6 is a better choice. | |
| Help with what's wrong with my 300b amp? You are correct not powering it up again. Something is definitely wrong with the amp that needs the attention of a qualified service technician and it is an exercise in futility to guess what it might be. The obvious place to start is with the man... | |
| high ac voltage destrucive or not? All AC voltmeters read the rms value of a sine wave, so unless you have seriously corrupted AC coming into your house the reading is accurate. | |
| cary v12 monos vs cj premier 5 monos $4,000 is very high for the CJ amps. They usually go for closer to $2,500. As stated they are getting on in years and are probably due for some maintenance (new capacitors and tubes)if it hasn't been done already. You can find Premier 12's for less... | |
| DVD Audio-Why can't I get my disc to play in 5.1? To avoid piracy of the digital signal, the DVD-A player cannot feed the surround signal via the digital input on the reciever, none of them can that I know of. The digital to analog conversion must be done by the DVD-A player, and you then feed th... | |
| Are tube amps class A ? It is a push-pull amp biased AB. A push pull amp can be biased A, like VAC's 300B amps, but CJ is AB. | |
| Are tube amps class A ? You can bias a tube to operate class A, AB, B, or C just like a transistor.Any amp you can build with an npn transistor has an equivalent that can be built with a tube. The big difference is there is no complementary device for a tube like you hav... | |
| Nelson Pass First Watt amp F1 Vivaldi Audio,Please clarify if you optimized your speakers with frequency shaping networks designed to work with the First Watt. These networks seems to me to be a key component to getting good performance from a transconductance amp. Thanks | |
| Nelson Pass First Watt amp F1 Hey Twl, from looking at this article it appears that a frequency shaping network is required to optimize the performance of a particular driver with this amp. If the ones you heard at the show did not have one (my guess is it did not) then that m... | |
| Nelson Pass First Watt amp F1 It is not compatible with multiple driver speakers unless the crossover is designed to be driven by a transconductance amolifier. | |
| All Music Guide- Who are If you look up an artist the biography has the author at the top right, and if you click on a particulat album that has a review it says who the reviewer is in the same place. | |
| Advice on upgrading phono stage The Ono has balanced outputs but it is not truly balanced. It is single ended until the output stage and then an inverted signal is created to provide a balanced output.I've had both an Ono and X-ono amd the X is definitely more "in your face" tha... | |
| avantgarde with SS amp recomendation The First Watt is a transconductance amplifier i.e. it maintains a constant output current for a given input voltage. This is in contrast to almost all other amps that are voltage amplifiers, they maintain a constant output voltage for a given inp... |
