Why don't amplifier Companies use high end fuses?
@geoffkait I put them in the long way. It's the only way they fit. Nelson seemed to like my amp. He called me a "fearless amp builder" for my going with 34.5V rails and removing the current limiting. In fact, my build is a full 50% more powerful t...
Why don't amplifier Companies use high end fuses?
What do I use in my Pass F5 clone? Bussmann. They sell them in 6 packs at AutoZone. They work great. They blow very consistently if I fumble with the power switch wrong. $50 for a fuse? I don't think so!
Why is good, deep bass so difficult? - Myths and their Busters
@shadorne I think you have a feeble grasp on the physics of the problem. One note? Hump? JM Labs? How long has it been since they were called that? I've looked at a bunch of cumulative response plots for a variety of speakers and there's very rare...
Are future improvements in Amp/PreAmps slowing to a crawl?
Regardless of the topology one chooses, the basic problem of building an amp that measures well and sounds good has been solved. Class D isn't going to bring about entirely new levels of fidelity. We already have amps that will drive any load with...
Are future improvements in Amp/PreAmps slowing to a crawl?
Like it or not, there are a good number of people who will never give class D a chance and I'm one of them. Class D is rife with problems and even the very best class D amps divide people in real decisive ways. The gold standard is class A and nob...
Directionality of wire
Man! You just can't tolerate your silliness being challenged at all, can you? I've lost count of how many times you've been taken to task only to resort to insults and picking on minor points of semantics while ignoring completely valid arguments....
Are future improvements in Amp/PreAmps slowing to a crawl?
Yeah, but class D amps are just attempting to solve a problem unrelated to sound, namely, power consumption. Not everyone wants a big class A amp that runs as hot as a toaster. The problem of flat, low distortion amplification has pretty much been...
Are future improvements in Amp/PreAmps slowing to a crawl?
I read that article and I think I agree. The question of "What is improvement?" is less a technical question and more a philosophical question.
What Is The Cost Of Amplifier Casework?
It exudes quality... In the machine shop they contracted to fabricate it. I'm sure people buy stuff based on how it looks. McIntosh doesn't stick those giant dials on everything because they tell you vital information. They look cool. Most people ...
Directionality of wire
Geoffkait doesn't let facts get in the way.
What Is The Cost Of Amplifier Casework?
I don't think the styling of the chassis has anything at all to do with the quality of the stuff inside. Plenty of great amps are packaged up in plain, well built, simple chassis. I think a chassis should be well built, but pimping the thing out w...
EI Vs Toroidal
The toroidal in my F5 clone hums surprisingly loudly. Virtually no noise at all through the speakers, but you can hear that toroidal humming away from 2 or 3 feet away. It almost makes a grunting sound when I power it up.
What Is The Cost Of Amplifier Casework?
Having built a muscled up Pass F5 clone I can absolutely assure you that the case is the single most expensive part of a power amplifier. Pass amps are pretty plain-jane as far as cases go. I used a steel 4U HiFi2000 case with no mods or extras an...
Tech That Flopped!
A lot of those "not so much" technologies have drawbacks and quirks. I've always thought line arrays we're a silly idea for home installation. Although with the advent of digitally manipulated speakers like those B&O monsters and the little Ki...
Current speaker threads are boring
I really have very little interest in listening to folks yammer on about 5 figure speakers. Kinda like I have no interest in listening to people debate the finer points of personal jets. I'm interested in maximizing the quality of what I have and ...
