Spend more money on the amp or the pre-amp?
@inna $8000 just means I'm building a pair of Pass F5T's and a real nice volume buffer and source selector.

I'm on the integrated boat too. I spent more than $800 building my Pass F5 and that thing is crazy simple. No soft start. No speaker protection. No current limiting. Class AB amps can be built cheaper because you don't need the hulking power suppl...
Vintage amps versus newer products
Thermionic valves are definitely simple, but obscenely nuanced which lends it's own complexity. The different varieties, the burn in, the burn out, the bias. I've looked at SET buffer pre amp designs. I'm tempted. Not so much by power stages.
Can I mix 5 ohm ( Front L/R) and 8 ohm (Surround & Sub) in a 7.1 speaker setup ?
Those MLs have a minimum impedance dip of 2.9 ohm in the upper mid-range. The wrong material with enough energy is quite likely to look like a short to that receiver's protection circuitry. https://www.soundandvision.com/content/review-martinlogan...
Vintage amps versus newer products
I wouldn't even miss tone controls to be honest. I have them. I twist them around sometimes to keep them clean. I don't use them though. About the only thing I'll ever use in my stereo that has integrated circuits is a DAC. Aside from that I'm all...
Vintage amps versus newer products
I don't mess with Marantz gear newer than 1977. The 78 and later stuff goes down hill sharply and is just an epic pain to work on. Amps are nothing to wire up. It's the AV receivers that are walls of connectors. I'd never buy one of those for musi...
Your 5 Fav Rock Concerts
This is easy. Tool: Toledo, Ohio 1/24/12Tool: Clarkston, Michigan 6/7/17The Dead: Rothbury, Michigan 7/4/10The Cure: Auburn Hills, Michigan way, way back.Tool does such an unusual show it's just a must-see. And they're exceptional at what they do....
HEGEL H80 volume question
I'm not familiar with the amp, but I'd think that the more likely culprit. The LS50 is a pretty reactive speaker. If there's some sort of transient impedance matching going on between them and the amp you might get volume wandering around. Just a ...
What speakers to go with my new Marantz 2265?
I really like my old ESS AMT1's. It's hard to beat the qualities of a big dipole AMT. They're bright, the midrange needs help, and the bass sounds 40 years old, but I still enjoy them with my old Marantz units. I think they're vastly better than o...
Reliable burn-in service for cables and outlets
Can't read or spell, eh? Not surprised.
Reliable burn-in service for cables and outlets
@geoffkait Geeze.... You're selling you're mythical, unsubstantiated snake oil here too?
unity gain active tube preamp?
I'm going with Selectric on this one. You seem to have a very clear idea about exactly what you need and the best way to get exactly what you need to to build it. I'll be building a pre-amp for similar reasons. I want to smooth some of the more ba...
DIY Pass Labs First Watt F5 amp impressions
I'm getting some brightness especially since I played with the distortion. I need to play with that a little bit more and find the right balance of second and third. It's nice to have an amp you can do that with.
Directionality of wire
I seriously doubt there are millions of people who buy into this directionality fantasy. And by your very description, Geoff, it's pure fantasy with no basis in reality. We can measure distortion far more accurately than any ear can hear, so where...
Speaker cable/Power cord/Interconnect Interference
I try to give cables space. All the power cords go to the far right against the wall. Anything crossing this is at good angles. My speaker cables are fat ole 6 conductor braided deals wrapped in cloth and fairly resistant to stray noise. If there’...
