Audio Education
@czarivey I kinda think you're right. It seems to me that when somebody starts getting a grip on electronics they stop believing in the snake oil and myths which seem to be the litmus test for being a "real" audiophile. The more I learn, the more ...
Audio Education
My suggestion, and what's worked well for me, dig into DIY. I suggest starting with Nelson Pass. He makes things very understandable and his designs are easy to build. Mr. Carlson's Lab on YouTube is excellent material too. The scope of his channe...
Talk but not walk?
I still haven't figured out what this whole thread is about. Which one of us doesn't have a stereo? Ain't that walking?
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
@johnnyb53 Sorry man... I've heard plenty of dipoles and plansrs. They sound very interesting, but never particularly convincing to me, especially with voices. Combine that with the complicated behavior and placement demands of those types of spea...
Is there actually a difference?
@erik_squires I've read almost all his articles and owners manuals and seen all his BA lectures. Can't recall anything of the sort. He doesn't worry much about the distortion of a pleasant sounding amplifier, but he doesn't design to add distortio...
Is there actually a difference?
@erik_squires Which amp exactly does Pass deliberately add distortion to? I've looked at a ton of his circuits and I haven't seen a schematic yet that points out "this is where I add the distortion". Exactly the opposite in fact.
narrow and wide baffles and imaging
Looking down this thread I kind of wonder if everybody is defining "imaging" the same way.
narrow and wide baffles and imaging
When people start talking imaging I sometimes wonder what they're talking about. I know some people are just talking about some sort of left-to-right point specificity. If that's all you're getting, I don't consider that very good imaging. I expec...
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
@johnnyb53 I'd say their size is one of the major drawbacks to speakers like that, too. Lots of things aren't huge radiating surfaces. Flutes. Horns. Human voices. I certainly think dipole speakers have advantages you can't get any other way, but ...
Is there actually a difference?
Mostly what you're paying for in really high dollar amps is the ability for a high power, multi-stage topology to deliver the nuance and performance you get from a simple, fairly inexpensive low power amplifier. That's really, really hard to do. A...
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
No, it's not. It's obvious. And you can't prove otherwise. So stop being a troll and sell your fantasies elsewhere.
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
@geoffkait The only symmetrical caps are stacked. Wire doesn't have any directionality and you can't prove it does. I'm not at all surprised you don't know something basic like making sure the outside terminal goes to ground.
Best Loudspeakers for Rich Timbre?
@geoffkait Any wrapped cap is directional. The outside terminal always goes to ground. Nothing at all to do with wire direction.
Does anyone leave their amp and preamp on all the time?
Seriously? Pointing out the history of the earth and that living in a modern society is good is offensive to somebody?
Does anyone leave their amp and preamp on all the time?
@wolf_garcia Well that’s a rant! You make it sound like humanity is the worst thing to ever happen to this little blue marble in space. Never mind asteroid impacts, global wild fires, plate tectonics and continental drift, solar flares, calderas, ...
