I think that Sns and Mapman are both correct. Sound reproduction should attempt to mirror the effects of live music as closely as possible, however it will never achieve this goal because of all the variables involved, not the least of which is a ...
Self bias tube integrated or power amp suggestions
I would highly recommend the PrimaLuna line, though this will cost a little more than a grand used. You might be able to find a Prologue One integrated for near that used.

Newbee, I just re-read what I posted, and that does sound crazy (I really should stop making these posts so late at night). If the whole orchestra is playing, and all of the violins are playing in unison, then no, it should be nearly impossible to...
resolution and imaging
There have been some odd comments in this thread today - one can't hear instrumental timbre from the back of the hall??? No localization??? You should be able to hear where an instrument is located on the stage from any seat in the hall. Many comp...
resolution and imaging
Nice thread - proper imaging and soundstaging is an extremely high priority for me, as I am a professional orchestral musician. I believe a recording engineer should try to recreate the sound of the orchestra in the hall as well as possible, but m...
I need an economical but good phono preamp?
The Bellari VP129 can be found here used for under $200, this is a great little tubed phonostage.
Overall opinions on Harman Kardon
I have an HK AVR that I used to use before I went to a dedicated two-channel audio system. It was great for watching movies, but you can do much better for audio.
Are most budget & mid range amps under-powered?
Agree that the speakers are the important part of the equation - I use horns myself, so I don't need to worry about not having enough power.
How do you level your turntable?
I also use just a bubble level on the plinth, and double-check it on the platter.
avr receiver help
Third the Harmon Kardon.
Compared tube preamps? Want remote & phonostage.
I like the Audible Illusions, and I don't care for the Rogue. Haven't heard the other two. That's my two cents.
Ann Arbor, Michigan Blues Music & Record Stores
Yeah, I checked out Overture Audio when I was there, and the guy in there was great, letting us listen to a couple of different systems that were already set up in there. I would recommend them highly to anyone living anywhere near there.

I forgot about Encore, it did indeed have a much bigger selection, however, the prices were also quite a bit higher in general than at PJ's. I would check PJ's first, then head over to Encore.
Ann Arbor, Michigan Blues Music & Record Stores
I was in Ann Arbor this summer and visited a great little record store called PJ's Records. It was in the second floor of a building near the U of M campus, I forget what street. He had alot of good jazz in particular, but also a fair amount of cl...
Rega P5 with Dynavector 10x5....ready to buy ???
Adam18 - I do like the sound of the PrimaLuna, and prefer it to the Rogue amps, which are a little too bright for my taste. And I like that you can run the Dialogue 2 in either ultralinear or triode mode at the touch of a button, that's a very nic...
