Which sub-help please
I'll second the recommendation of the Velodyne SMS-1 stand alone DRC unit (or similar, like the SVS/Audyssey) with any decent sub of your choice. DRC doesn't guarantee a seamless match, but I can assure you it improves your odds by about an order ...
Black-Eyed-Peas, the future of modern music?
Jaybo,Is that Carol "Doctor's Orders" Douglas or Carl "Kung Fu Fighting" Douglas?

Bi-wire Silverline Prelude II: Is it worth it??
No.This a good speaker (and a better value), but it isn't the most revealing or resolving device in the world. I use a modestly priced single wire and would hesitate to throw too much money at cabling up the Preludes. Just MHO.Marty
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Bond,I pretty much agree with everything you've written here. I'd only add that the Merlins are more revealing of upstream events and have a dynamic "jump" - especially with tube amps - that the Ohms lack. Just MHO. Overall, I'd say that these are...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Aktchi,FWIW, I've had the Verity Parsifal/Encore and the Merlin VSM (uprgrade to near current status) in the same system as my Ohm 100/Rythmik sub system. I can't compare the speakers with the subs on-line and I only ran the 100s full range for a ...
Full Range Speaker That Can Play Near Boundaries
The older Merlin VSM SE was a little thin through the mid-bass when placed in free space. The octave to octave balance fleshed out a bit with hear wall placement and actually sounded a bit more natural to my ear. However, I also felt that the spea...
Vintage loudspeakers....Sleeper models....
Bill,Now that you mention it.....I seem to recall that mine were the ssm-7 (smaller 3 way), but yep, that's the series. I thought they were quite good in a lot of ways, but I did eventually sell them. (I geuss they weren't quite good enough to kee...
Vintage loudspeakers....Sleeper models....
Oops, mine were 3 ways.As Emily Latella said "Never mind".Marty
Vintage loudspeakers....Sleeper models....
If the Sony speakers that you found are the ones I'm thinking of - they had a complex cabinet shape (vaguely Avalon-esque) - then they were much more than simply decent performers. I once owned a pair: nicely finished, wide bandwidth, and quite ne...
the greatest pop song ever?
Ras 422,I always thought that The Showmen were overlooked. Everyone hailed Brian Wilson when he fused vocal music (doo wop) with Chuck Berry, Cal sunny lyrics and his own lunatic production vision. Meanwhile, over on the East Coast, Allen Toussain...
the greatest pop song ever?
"Five O'Clock World" is a great song that got a second life as the theme song for Drew Carey's sitcom. Loved it before that, loved it even more afterwards. For me, "Would't It Be Nice" can't quite match "Good Vibrations". Talk about production valu...
High pass and low pass filters
An Audyssey/SVS sub controller or Velodyne SMS-1 sub controller is the easiest way that I know of to integrate a sub seamlessly. These devices also add digital room correction in the bass region which is IMHO a fantastic benefit. They're not inexp...
Hemp Drivers, musicians lov'em, audiophiles?
BTW,My comment was in no way a criticism of hemp drivers, as I've never heard one. I was just pointing out that Santana's use of this type of driver for performance/recording is no endorsement for that driver in a home system.Marty
Hemp Drivers, musicians lov'em, audiophiles?
An electric guitarist will choose an amp/cabinet (speaker) in large part on the way that combo sounds when grossly distorting the signal. This is quite different than an audiophile application. Production vs reproduction can be apples vs orangesMarty
