Where do tubes matter most???
Tubes in the pre-amp are easier to do and maintain, but the biggest difference in sound is, IMHO, found in the amp. I have an all tube system and I have to admit that I could use a good passive or a neutral ss preamp without loosing much but I jus...
I have figured out the upgrade itch
I agree with you to a point - you seem to distinguish between critical listening for the sound of the components and "serious" listening which includes listening to music while doing other things, such as reading. How about introducing a third typ...
Operas... Any fans?
Great recommendations!
Am I imagining things?
Sound's like you want some good old fashion lower-mid range warmth that many, but not all, tube amps bring (along with those airy highs. Dumb question - why not just buy a tube amp. If there really was such a thing as a SS amp which sounded like a...
Listening to ALL your music
From my point of view life is too short to impose such a task onto yourself. While I wholeheartedly agree with you about the time wasted listening to the sound of your system as opposed to the music, don't waste more time listening to music you do...
The Power of Positioning
Yep, trade out the acoustic foam for some book cases and lots of various sized books - it becomes dispursive in nature which is usually better than absorbtive, and it will impress the hell out of people who will think you are literate - Make sure ...
The best DAC for the money
For the money you can't beat a Cal Audio Alpha. I see them used for 350+/- reguarily. This tube DAC has a slightly forward midrange and is just magnificent for vocals and small jazz groups. I prefer it in that aspect to my BAT.
What was your first system, & did you like it?
The first system I really "put together" consisted of An Apt Holman pre amp, Hatachi 7500 Mos Fet amp, Rectilinear 7's speakers, Technics 1200 Turntable & Shure V series cartridge, Sansui Tuner, and a Teac 10 1/2" R2R. Just loved it - then I s...
Rediscovering the Joy of Digital?
Plato, Everytime I had a a clean and undamaged disc skipping problem I utimately traced it to the CDP or transport I was using. It needed cleaning, repairs or replacements. Take those bad CD's some where and see if they skip on other players. I ha...
The Power of Positioning
Just can't resist joining in this circle jerk. I can't believe what people spend their money on, yet ignore simple room acoustics! Now how many have tuned in their listening position as accurately as their speakers, or is this one in the same? And...
100w class A or 200 w class AB ????
I always thought that the benefit of Class A over Class AB was that, apart from the build factor, was the elimination of distortions due to the switching from Class A to Class B when you reach the limits of Class A in any particular design. Did I ...
Rediscovering the Joy of Digital?
Plato, You put your post in the right forum this time! It was clear that you were set up for an assignation when you posted in the analog columm where the vinylphiles rule with a heavy hand. It has happened to others before you - been there, where...
About Tubes.........
As far as I know EL34's are interchangable. It's mostly about experimenting with your particular amp and having some idea about what you are trying to improve. I have no experience with your amps at all, with stock tubes or otherwise. But, before I...
The BLISS of returning to ANALOG: my experience
I've nothing new to add to this old and somewhat stale debate forming over CD vs vinyl, however as I type I'm listening to my Tivoli radio which is playing Barbers Violin Concerto, and I'm transported. I guess I should call the station and see if ...
something is wrong here, but what is it?
Interesting. How have you connected the CJ 10a to the PF R? Did you go from tape out to a line in?
