Do we still need 6550 or KT88 tubes?
I recently replaced the KT 120's in my ARC REF-75 with the KT-150's. Night and day! Highly recommended for this amp.
ARC Phono Ref 2 SE - Dealer Demo Unit Worth Price?
I've traveled down the ARC Phono stage road from the PH-3 right through the PH-8 that I am presently using. Contrary to an earlier poster in this thread, in my system, the PH-8 made the PH-7se and all of its predecessors it replaced sound broken. ...
cartridge demagnetization
I demag my cartridges. Has anyone noticed that it takes a few sides to smooth out after demagnetizing your cartridge. It always sounds a little bright to me at first, and then things settle down and sounds great.
Anyone into cassettes?
It really is amazing how good a well recorded cassette sounds considering how slow the tape moves. A good vinyl record recorded from a high end system onto a cassette tape can sound amazing.
Tonearm: Well Tempered Lab LTD MK2
I have an original WT tonearm. In fact, its one of the very first that Bill Firebaugh built. I've was the second owner, being the first to take it out of the box. I've rewired it with Cardas tonearm wire and dampened the tube with one layer of shr...
Audio-Technica AT-ART9 phono cartridge
Thank you Pani for an excellent response to my opening post. You've pretty much made the decision for me. I love the sound of my OC9 Mk III, so a step up to the ART9 should be just the ticket. As a side note, the OC9III is superb on mono records. ...
Stand out phono stages
lovin' my Audio Research PH-8. Prior phono stages were ARC PH-5 and PH-7se. The PH-8 Makes the other's sound broken.
how refined are your ears?
And then there is Rita Streich. :>)
Review: Acoustat Model 2 Speaker
Back in the early 80's I had a pair of Acoustat III's that I drove with an ARC Classic 60. I sold the III's and bought a pair of Acoustat IV's. Removing the grill cloths really opened things up. I still drove them with the ARC CL60 ... nice, but n...
Review: Audio Research Ref-3 Tube preamp
Excellent review. I'm the original owner of a REF-3 and I totally love it. Here's a tip for ARC owners of the equipment that uses the tube dampers ... Move the dampers as far up the tube as possible without the top damper coming off. Be sure that ...
Review: Lyra Clavis (1992) Cartridge
I have the original Clavis and like the first commentator, removed the case (which improved the sound quite a bit) and eventually had an accident. I still have the cartridge and was thinking of either sending it back for a rebuild, or using it in ...
Kind Of Blue 1st pressing stereo...
A number of years ago, I walked into my favorite thrift store where they had just put out the records for the day. Right there in front ... and I mean the first record, was Kind of Blue. The jacket was almost mint. As I reached in to pull the reco...
Anyone into cassettes?
Thrift stores are a great source of premium quality tapes ... used of course. Just make sure the tapes aren't broken, then use a tape erasure (available at Radio Shack). I use the large eraser intended for VCR tapes. As a side benefit, you can als...
Has any audiophile fellows compare the sound.
I have the REF 75 and it is a fantastic amp. BUT ... you haven't heard what is can really do until you change out the KT 120 tubes for KT 150's. This is a major improvement. The tubes are available from upscale audio. If you go with the 150's, you...
Anyone compared Audio Research Ref 75 with Ref 250
Hmmm ... no comments. What did you decide to do?
