Time to choose: Baerwald, Lofgren, Stevenson ?
Lew, I've been happy with a Dennesen for alignment for years.  I find it so much faster, easier, and therefore more likely to be correct than 2-point arc protractors, such as the DB Systems I used previously. However, I do utilize a good light and ...
...a second listen
stringreen, you experience points out something we all should remember, at least from my perspective.Even small changes may be audible and many times something new/different may sound better.  So I find the best procedure is to make an A/B/A compa...
Time to choose: Baerwald, Lofgren, Stevenson ?
Raul,Appropriate to the subject line for this post there are three primary alignments commonly used, identified by the names of the men who developed them.  I jokingly referred to them as the "big 3".My reason for commenting yesterday was to add t...
Time to choose: Baerwald, Lofgren, Stevenson ?
Since downunder raised the point of alternatives to the "big 3" for alignment, I'll further muddy the waters by suggesting yet another. This one comes from Allen Wright's site for vacuumstate.  I happen to own one of his JLTi phono stages, but that...
Manley Jumbo Shrimp upgrade
celtic66, you might check with Manley, providing your serial number, to see if there are any factory upgrades.Otherwise, if you'd like to experiment I'd agree with trying a few different tubes.  I don't have experience with expensive fuses so cann...
VPI Industries reveals Shinola x VPI table.
"You don’t know s--- from Shinola, that’s why your shoes don’t shine" Nice story dtc, but I have some problem believing that was used in any form to promote the original company's polish.  I always just associated the first part of the expression ...
VPI Industries reveals Shinola x VPI table.
I may not be in the market for one of these but I'm still pleased to see the announcement.  I've been a fan of, and own some, VPI products for years.  And having grown up in Michigan I've also been aware of Shinola and their high quality products ...
Time to choose: Baerwald, Lofgren, Stevenson ?
Hi nandric, you seem to be quite specific with language so I will try to clarify my intent.  In my mind a general rule does not set a standard.  It merely suggests something which may be followed or expected the majority of the time.  So a general...
Time to choose: Baerwald, Lofgren, Stevenson ?
A general rule?OK, I’ll admit that can be dangerous, but how about this? If you need to set up for 7" records (nandric, those large center hole 45s) or mainly symphonic classical, then Stevenson may be your best alignment.Otherwise, play other LPs...
Using tube amp with electrostatic speakers.
stewart, "Planars whether it be magnetic or electrostatic sound their best when fed prodigious solid state juice....."Some years ago I heard a Magnepan demo at the CES where they were driving MG 3.6s bi-amped with Bryston amps (no recollection of ...
Experience with Tannoy Westminster Royal Gold Reference
hddg, if you can consider US $60K then you might want to look at this -http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/the-david-berning-company-211845-power-amplifier/I suspect that might be magical.
Test CD for positioning speakers and subwoofer
I worked out a procedure to locate speakers (nearly full range floor standers) with a Stereophile Test CD and RS SPL meter.  My meter is placed on a tripod at ear height at the listening seat position.  I record response throughout the 200 to 40 H...
Micro Seiki MA 505 vs Triplanar MK VII UII
jsman,Since I'm not looking to sell my MA505 I've not made any attempt to keep up on current values.  My comment was based on experience a couple of years ago.
Micro Seiki MA 505 vs Triplanar MK VII UII
Hi sam,A few years ago I got a MA505S which I discovered had a counterweight stub which was not secure and therefore drooped.  Closer examination revealed one of the tiny screws near the connection point was missing (it turned out it had be broken...
Kuzma tables/arms?
fjn,For many years I owned and enjoyed a Kuzma Stabi (oak plinth model with heavy lid) and Stogi Reference arm.  I've been in this hobby for a few decades and owned several different tables/arms prior to that.I consider the Kuzmas to be very well ...
