Which is a better choice? New, or used preamp?
I would always go used; I bought my current pre , $7000 list, as a demo for $3000 and my previous one, $5000 list, used from a recording studio which was a victim of the recession for $1900. Components are like cars, they usually lose a lot of val...
Newbie needs advice
The Quads are still quite decent; I would put the money into different speakers but then CVs were never my favorite speakers. I don't know anything about your turntable or mixer so can't advise on them. Sit down and listen to your system and make ...
help with Thorens headshell
The problem I seem to remember was the pin arrangement may have been different on the Thorens arm; something like the Grace arm using a different pin lay out on its arm cable so that no other cable will work. I believe all SME standard pin arrange...
ever been duped ordering "new" CDs on Amazon?
One and a half a week; I do the same. I can play the one on my regular CD player but have to get the half track dac out for the .5 one. This is dedicated to my one time neighbors kid who ask me how I was doing squirrel hunting. I told him I was av...
How to identify a Celestion SL 700 SE?
Or try posting on HIFIWIGWAM, a British audio forum.
help with Thorens headshell
My memory is that Thorens had a slightly different headshell than the SME standard but it has been a looong time since I had one.
Unfocused Sound stage
I have never heard of this and don't see how it could occur. I have used DC coupled amps in the past and have reversed wiring many times. Wouldn't a phase reversal switch also blow the amp in your description? My CJ 350 reverses phase as does my M...
Replace pre-amp
I would fix it if I liked it; would be much cheaper than searching for a new one. I would at least get a diagnosis and estimate before I abandoned it.
pass labs xa30 to valve amplifier.
I think it is a mistake to think all valve[ or tube as we say here in the colonies] amps sound the same. I have heard ones that sound as you describe and others that sound more upfront and brighter than my own SS gear. I would focus on a perticula...
Reciver/Integrated same sound?
Very rarely did receivers come close to the performance of integrated amps; they were made for different markets and to different standards. Two integrated amps from the same company were not guaranteed to sound the same; let alone an amp and a re...
Pressing Issues
Perhaps it is a manifestation of the "future absorber-past absorber" theory of radiation proposed by Fred Hoyle and his associate J. Narlacar [sp.?] in which events radiate equally into the past and future.
Metrum Octave Dac experiences
" I still need to try it with oversampled music"; I don't quite take your meaning here. As I understand it an oversampling deck takes multiple looks at the data in the recording; a NOS deck doesn't do this; the data is the same whether an oversamp...
B&W DM6 Wadding
I had a couple of pairs of these around 1980. If it were me I would either leave it as is or add some more modern damping material to give a similar effect. It was designed to have a certain amount of damping; removing some or all will certainly c...
Why do some volume controls start at -80db or..?
My Audia starts at -90. If you like things that start at zero let me recommend the Kelvin temperature scale; starts at absolute zero. Water boils at 373 K etc.
which burmester pre to buy used ?
Believe it of not many years ago I could have ordered a new Burmeister for $250 or $300 direct from the company. Passed as it wasn't US voltage. OK, it was a LONG time ago. But current prices still give me sticker shock when I stop to think. I hav...
