Back in the 80's and 90's Audio Research and Conrad Johnson
Having owned several of each during the "golden age" of the 80's and 90's and listening to virtually all of them during that time when they WERE both widely available at B&Ms, I agree that the CJ's were generally warmer. Another notable differ...
Tube preamp reliability vs SS?
"Musicians love tube amps since tubes are easy to replace. Semiconductors failure is harder to diagnose and usually require professional repair."Not too sure about that Kijanki.  I would think it's more about the fact that the sound can be manipu...
Tube preamp reliability vs SS?
"Would running low freq music, heavy bass techno etc etc through system break in the capacitors at all on preamp? Adding more bass overall???"A very good question, I really have no idea as to how that might affect the capacitor break in, Al or Ra...
Tube preamp reliability vs SS?
You can listen before 30 minutes, you don't have to wait that long. The warm up time, optimal performance, for tube gear varies depending on manufacturer. Changing out a tube will not void a warranty. It is pull out the old and plug in the new, si...
Questions on KT150 tubes
I have a pair of Quicksilver Silver 88s using the Kt-150. I bought a quad of Genelex Kt-88s for use in a pair of McIntosh MC60 amps I also have on hand. My thinking after having the Kt88s was "why not try in the Silver 88s to compare with the Kt15...
Why do some dealers
I think you ask a most interesting question Taters, something to consider for sure. Too bad the snide, uninformative comments, in the quest for amusement detract from it. I am MOST impressed with the responses of bpd24 and Oregonpapa which are bot...
Which components are "stupid good"?

Latest Absolute Sound
"Though i’ve found with few exceptions the companies with the most integrity don’t take out full page ads in glossy audio mags."Maybe, I haven't counted but have you seen their glossy brochures that are available at audio shows? I have no problem ...
Tube for MHDT Labs Paradisea+ DAC
I had/have a Havana so can't comment on the buffer tube in the Paradisea but I definitely preferred the Bendix 2c51 over both the WE 396a D getter or the Tung Sol which is also very nicely balanced. I suppose it depends more on taste and system ba...
What is/are your the most favourite composer s ?
In the spirit of your post, blasting song after song I would add to many of the above a few 20th century composers of popular music much of which is timeless.George GershwinDuke EllingtonAntonio Carlos (Tom) JobimRichard Rodgers
Reference 3A or Mark & Daniel or...
I've had a pair of the Decapo BE for almost 2.5 years which I fell in love with on first listen which is quite rare for me.  Truly stunning speakers IMHO and the closest I've heard a 2-way come to the cohesive and transparent sound of Quads. The D...
REO fans
Totally agree, REO 1 and 2 are the ones to have. That raw, garage band sound before they smoothed out a bit after their later success. Never saw them perform unfortunately.
Need Tube Preamp Warmth
Lowrider based on your system and the fact that you don't list a phono stage as being required but don't list the phono stage you are currently using the question would be do you require a pre-amp with a phono stage? Of course if looking for a lin...
What vintage speaker might you use today
Apogee and Quad. If I had more space I would DEFINITELY use one of these two for a 2nd system but probably NOT for an only system.
Need Tube Preamp Warmth
"The ideal preamp will reproduce classical music in an organic and natural way. (Not looking for vintage). My budget is $2000 to $2500 used. Any help is much appreciated."I third the CJ choice, it fits the bill of what you're asking especially in t...
