Desperately seeking the elusive tube sound
I once knew a guy that had a product called "See-Ya-Later". Send him some money and he said "See ya later". Ha! By the way, I have this extra bridge in Brooklyn that I don't need anymore, and ..................
The Best System In The World
Yes, I do suspect it was an attempt to do just that. All I can say is that I applaud his effort and commitment. Perhaps his goals are different than mine.
The Best System In The World
That Number 1 system was downright scary! An 8-way horn system, using digital source and SS electronics. Yikes!
Help: low Maintenance Tube Amp short list.
Berning ZH-270 is 70 wpc, has auto biasing, runs cool, has 10-20 year tube life, and has about the highest reliability rating of anything. Also has about the best sound, and is under $5k. Hard to beat. Plug and play. No long warmup required. Downs...
Denon/Shelter with SME 309 and Ear 834P
Romy, Thorsten uses a 309 with his 103.

DJ cartridges are made to take abuse. Audiophile cartridges are not. As far as the sound goes, that would be up to individual taste. I'll stick with audiophile cartridges, because I rarely engage in manually "scratching" my records back and forth!
Ortofon MC Question
The new Ortofons will sound even better than the old one you tried. They are nice cartridges.
Krell KRC phonocard or stand alone phonoamp?
If you are satisfied with your preamp, then get the card. If you are thinking of changing the preamp, then an outboard phono section may be the better choice. The EAR 834 is a nice one, and there are several others under $1k that are good too. Buy...
Denon/Shelter with SME 309 and Ear 834P
The impedance won't be a real big deal, but if you can change it to 100 ohms, that would be the value you'd want to have it at.I think with a linestage that has 16db gain, you will have just about perfect performance.
Why no remote?
Well, here's one reason. To provide a remote costs money. If the manufacturer is trying to hit a price point, he can either improve the sonic components, or put in a remote control. So, at a given price, all other things being equal, the non-remot...
Denon/Shelter with SME 309 and Ear 834P
That setup should work out fine, as long as you have some reasonable gain in your linestage. Either of those cartridges should work well in your 309, and the 834P has 68db gain for the MC section, which could be enough depending on your linestage....
Return to analog
If you liked the Linn, you'll like the Nottingham or the Michell. They are both in your price range.
Is 2 channel dead?
Surround sound is for movies only.
What tunes to "spin" while spinning?
How about "Richard Simmons" Sweatin' to the Oldies. Or Jane Fonda's Workout Record. :^)
VPI HR-X vs SME 20
Both TTs are very good, and both will show good deep bass quality. What you probably were hearing is that the SME table was probably equipped with an SME tonearm, which are noted for their excellent bass response. The HRX was equipped with the JMW...
