Noise Filters & ferrite beads....
In my opinion, placing ferrite beads on signal carrying wires is a bad thing. The musical signal has a varying magnetic field that is present several millimeters outside the wire. Collapsing this field with a ferrite bead or shield will have adver...
Best SET amp for Coincident Total Eclipse speaker
The Wyetech Topaz with the 572 output tubes is supposed to be a great combination with the Eclipse. David Berning Siegfried with either 811 or 300B is great with just about anything that has reasonable efficiency.
Clash of the Titans
Albert, I haven't heard them, but I've been told that the Convergent Audio Technology(CAT) JL-1 is a helluva amp. You can use 6550s, EL-34s, or 6L6s in it for your preference. Pentodes wired in triode. Push-Pull. Performs much stronger than the ve...
No interest in battery powered components?
Jeff, I understand your point about making things simple. I am also interested in a simple solution. Unfortunately, at this time, there are few manufacturers working in this direction. That leaves us DIY types to handle the task, if we can. Maybe ...
No interest in battery powered components?
One caveat to the above post. Since large battery systems can dump enough current to arc weld, proper fusing of the output cables is needed to reduce the possibilty of a fire in case of a direct short circuit on the output lines.
No interest in battery powered components?
Audiofile99, yes you can increase the voltage by adding batteries in series. With 12v batteries, 2 in series would give the 24v you are talking about. And yes, you can parallel the batteries for more run time. No danger in doing this. There is no ...
No interest in battery powered components?
Brtritch, I think that the wall wart supplied components are easiest to convert, since many actually step-down and rectify to DC right at the wall wart. This would only require a battery and simple regulator circuit to make it battery powered. Som...
Which phono preamp?
I agree with Kana813. Get an MFA preamp. It's killer.
Cartridge For Origin Live 250 Silver Arm
Johnny, I have an Origin Live Silver 250 arm. I think it is a super tonearm, with excellent design. I use a Denon DL103 cartridge with it. I am still breaking in the cartridge, but I am playing records about 7 hours a day, so I am making quick pro...
How to fight dirty power - I need your help
I went the other route. I generate my own power. I use battery power supply whenever possible. My turntable and power amp are supplied by battery. I am working on converting my preamp to battery power supply. My MC step-up is a passive transformer...
What should I upgrade next?
I think you should buy a good turntable and some good records. Then, after you have improved the source, continue with upgrades down the chain, in the order of signal travel. I have heard some pretty low end speakers sound quite amazing when they ...
Nottingham Space Deck, or wait for something else?
John, I recommend getting the very best sounding turntable that you can afford. My philosophy is to maximize the source component, so you can get the most information into the system. If the info gets in, then you have a chance at getting it out t...
DIY speaker pictures site?
Try the Single Driver Website.
Thick or thin speaker & interconnect cables ?
I use 30ga. single conductor unshielded copper IC's and 22ga. single conductor copper spkr. wire. Both are in oversize teflon or polyethylene tubing for as much air dielectric as possible.Speaker wires are bare wire terminated. I use all tube elec...
