Review: Vestax Handy Trax Turntable
Thanks for looking Trackingforce. My Vestax has since been replaced by the Numark PT-1 that's virtually identical inside, but has a smaller, squarer case and includes both sizes of headphone jacks, plus thankfully has a recessed power switch. I to...
Beating the RVG Horse
OK, I just went downstairs and grabbed a bunch of RVG CDs and sampled each for about a minute in succession. Sound quality is, as suspected, all over the map. I think this must have mostly to do with the original recordings as opposed to the remas...
Beating the RVG Horse
DM: When I say smooth, I'm talking specifically about texture. Most of the 80's BN CDs I've got sound more rough and brash compared with various later reissues, RVGs included. To me the older disks sound more 'digital' for lack of a better term. T...
Where did tracking error go?
I didn't say anything against linear arms, or in preference of pivoted ones. If we're talking about the theoretical ideal for how a cartridge ought to traverse a record, of course the answer is linearly. I just don't feel that skating forces in pa...
Beating the RVG Horse
I haven't found that all of the RVG CDs I've bought have sounded tipped-up, but tipped-up or not they're certainly smoother texturally than most of the older Blue Note CDs. But to the point of your post, you can't know, between the response change...
audio advice
Isn't that what these forums do?
Where did tracking error go?
I don't agree that absence of skating forces is a bigger deal than incorrect azimuth. Variously adjusting anti-skate on my table produces relatively little change in sound quality. Even though the counterforce can't be 100% correct across the reco...
Bought my first new audiophile LP...back it goes
Johnjbarlow wrote: "Why would some poor kid want to pay $18. for something that doesn't sound any better than what he can download for free?"Not defending record company pricing, but AAMOF (thanks Nrchy!), most of the downloading you're talking ab...
Disconnecting speaker while power amp on - any dan
Another reason to avoid this is that you may accidentally bridge the binding posts (with your wrench, or by rotation of a spade lug) while the power is on and the speaker is still hooked up, which can sometimes zap a driver or crossover element.
Where did tracking error go?
Tracking error in pivoted arms as opposed to linear arms didn't go anywhere of course, it's just that, as with direct-drive vs. belt-drive, there are reasons why one method has generally prevailed in the home audio market, and those reasons have t...
Vinyl records grading scale
I dislike adding the "EX" grade in between VG+ and NM, or the use of "++" or "-" anywhere. Too much BS wiggle room. Folks should just stick with NM, VG+ (or EX, take your pick but not both), VG and G. Everything else is just the symptom of creepin...
Changing power conditioner stock power cord
David12: True enough about that cord affecting the whole system. It's equally true of the cords on the power and pre amplifiers as well.
The Best Amp for the Price of Dirt
Is the Behringer a linear class-A/B amp or a switching amp? Their website doesn't seem to say.
Do we believe in Machina Dynamics?
Not that I've tried it Audioblazer, but that Shakti Hallograph thingy strikes me as classic snake oil too -- something I say based solely on having seen it pictured and read the ad copy, which looks and sounds like unmitigated BS along the lines o...
Can you imagine a world without vinyl?
Ah, the acolyte and the apostle. Ok, he has my thanks for you. As for me, I never quit vinyl, so I'll skip the enlightenment. ;^)
