Anyone use no turntable mat on a lenco or gerrard?

I am experimenting without a turntable mat and was wondering for idler wheels do people tend to use or not use them.

I use a rega r700 arm with my lenco and just switched out the mat and did not yet adjust vta with counterweight. My cart is Ortofon A90 which some have liked best with a slightly raised tonearm in rear.

I have not fussed with counterweight in that had real TT pro set it and don't want to futz with setting and not be able to get it
back exactly since relative novice here
