Athena F2s...

These were the talk of the town in 02...and still very impressive today....phenominal, clean bass reproduction from a ported box enclosure...excellent for reggae and electronic music...less stellar and dimensional on vocals and midrange dominated music...but still very good...highs are sweet, airy and clear(no metal tweeter!)...one thing for sure..you are not in monitor land anymore with these...all in all...a very competent, competitive performer and a steal at used prices(got mine for 99)...

In 2003 when it occurred to me that I had to replace my Cerwin Vega D-9's because the cones had dry rotted, I decided to go to Best Buy because I read good things about the F-2's on some website. They didn't do much for me and I took them back to Best Buy. I assume I was matching them with the wrong electronics because I did not get the bass etc. I heard about, but that was before I knew about the phenomenon called speaker break in. They were probably decent low fi speakers that I did not break in but I'll never know. It was not too many months afterwards that I found Audiogon on the net and it has been a slippery slope down the money trail through many pairs of speakers ever since. You will not find much interest or support of a discussion on speakers such as Athena here at Audiogon, because the brand and the speaker are not at the level of mid fi or high end that would interest members here, some of who may have owned Athenas once in their audio equipment history. But I'm sure you were prepared for that. Good listening! however, since proper matching of amp and speakers, no matter what level, can be satisfying.
I understand the F2s could be a polarizing discussion...but Stereophile...for what its worth...did place them on their recommended list years ago...ironically...the actual article gives the impression of a rating higher than class d...and states they can rival 2k speakers...i would have to agree...they offer "real", clean, visceral bass...not the wimpy one-not bass found on a majority of monitors...jazz walking basslines sound amazingly deep...the transparency and imaging is also very good, approaching and bettering some far more expensive speakers....
