Bands with great second albums

Bands that had a great second album. We all know the obvious ones Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Beatles. What are your votes for great second albums. Some of mine are:
Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Elvis Costello - This Years Model
Allman Brothers Band - 'Idlewild South'
Badfinger - No Dice
128x128lenmc2964
The Band - The Band! A GREAT follow-up to MFBP! These two recordings will enshrine their place in Rock music history!
Jimi Hendrix - Axis Bold As Love! The even-better masterpiece follow-up to The Experience's audacious debut!
Ten Years After - Undead! The great British blues band with powerhouse guitar slinger Alvin Lee burning up the fretboard!
Cream - Disraeli Gears! Great follow-up to debut Fresh Cream! Clapton, Bruce and Baker as psychedelic blues rockers!
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow! San Francisco's best band hits a home run with their new singer Grace Slick! Feed your head!
Procul Harum - Shine On Brightly! British psychedelic blues rockers step up to the plate and deliver a masterpiece! Check out side two's epic "In Held Twas In I"!
Patti Smith Group - Radio Ethiopia! A worthy successor to Horses! The two best releases of the '75-'76 NYC downtown scene!
Tarkus
Desperado
In The Wake Of Poseidon
The Bends
In Search Of The Lost Chord
Strange Days
Pretzel Logic

Some great nominations, particularly The Band (big surprise ;-), Neil Young, and Procol Harum. I’ll add Bob Dylan’s The Freewheelin’, Buffalo Springfield’s Again, The Byrds’ Turn! Turn! Turn!, Juliana Raye’s Something Peculiar (great album produced by Jeff Lynne), The Traveling Wilbury’s Vol.3, Dave Edmunds’ Subtle As A Flying Mallet, Nick Lowe’s Labour Of Lust, Jellyfish’s Spilt Milk, The Dwight Twilley Band’s Twilley Don’t Mind (not as good as their incredible debut Sincerely, but that was awfully hard to match), Iris Dement’s wonderful My Life, Los Lobos’ How Will The Wolf Survive? (second English-language album), Jackson Browne’s For Everyman, David Lindley’s Win This Record!, The Sons Of Champlin’s (about the only real good Hippie band) The Sons, The Yardbirds’ Having A Rave Up With (ignoring the semi-released live album---as a debut?!), Buddy Miller’s Poison Love, plenty of others.
I would add to the good suggestions above "Projections," the second album of The Blues Project. While most of my listening is to classical music, this is one of my all-time favorite rock albums.

Regards,
-- Al
So many already mentioned that I would have chosen. I will add Stand Up by Jethro Tull and Candy O by The Cars.

Tough to put out a better second album than Radiohead's "The Bends".  Perhaps Nirvana's "Nevermind" is the right there with it.  In the jazz world I often prefer a bandleader's second album such as Ornette Coleman's "Change of the Century".  You can see these guys' confidence building after a successful debut is under their belt and they real start pushing it, in a good way.
I may be wrong, but isn't Steely Dan's second LP COUNTDOWN....?
Many great choices here. Strange Days (already said) was the first that came to my mind. How about counting the Buckingham/Nicks era of Fleetwood Mac as a new one, and submitting Rumors, which came after their S/T LP.. (-:
Top o’ the heap sophomores include:

Zep II
With The Beatles
Deja Vu
Tarkus
Get Your Wings
The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get
Communiqué

Oh yeah, Ram by Paul McCartney. Not a band of course, but that wasn't absolutely literal, right?
Montrose "Paper Money"
Tom Petty "You're Gonna Get It"
AC/DC "High Voltage"
Tift Merritt "Tambourine"
The Wallflowers "Breach"
The Black Crowes "The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion"

Al,
I went on to Amazon to check out the Projections disc. I liked it and ordered it. If you aren't already familiar with it, may I suggest Seatrain. I prefer the self-titled disc to Marblehead Messenger. Andy Kulberg was a member of that band as well. Really great songs.
Mountain - Mountain Climbing. Leslie West wringing the beejeezus out of his Les Paul Junior!
Celtic Frost's To Mega Therion! Awesome sophomore effort from Tom Gabriel Warrior and his Swiss band mates! Avante garde Black Metal!

@roxy54---Good call on the 2nd (s/t) Seatrain album. On it they do my favorite version of Lowell George’s "Willin’".

Randy Newman’s 12 Songs.

Paul Simon’s There Goes Rhymin’ Simon.

Lyle Lovett’s Pontiac.

Emmylou Harris’ Elite Hotel.

Ry Cooder’s Into The Purple Valley.

The Blasters’ s/t.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band's East-West.

The Grateful Dead’s Anthem Of The Sun.

The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band’s The Doughnut In Granny’s Greenhouse.

This is fun!

Little Feat "Sailin’ Shoes"
Bob Marley and the Wailers "Soul Rebel"
+1 Grateful Dead "Anthem of the Sun"
i agree with Dylan-The Freewheelin; Springsteen-The Wild,The Innocent; Steely Dan-Countdown to Ecstasy; Elvis Costello-This Year's Girl; Led Zeppelin-II; Neil Young-Everyone Knows; Jackson Browne-For Everyman; and the Band's S/T album.  I'd add Joni Mitchell- Clouds; Graham Parker-Heat Treatment; Steve Forbert-Jackrabbit Slim; James Taylor-Sweet Baby James, Warren Zevon-Excitable Boy; Simon & Garfunkel-Sounds Of Silence; and U2-October.

elvis costello, this years modelgraham parker, heat treatmentmeat puppets iielliott smith s/twire, chairs missingjoy division, closerposies, frosting on the beaterloudon wainwright, album ii

I'm pretty sure Tom Petty's "Damn the Torpedoes" was his sophomore effort. Better than the 1st, to me.
Yes- Indeed, Fragile is great... But their second album Time and a Word is a strong album. I really like their their first four, with Close to the Edge next. I am always engaged by their first two, and Time and a Word early press LP sounds darned good. Agree on Joni: Clouds, but I feel it is sandwiched between two better albums.
Here are some more esoteric choices:

Gentle Giant, Acquiring the Taste
Ambrosia, Somewhere I've Never Traveled
PFM, Per un amico
Iceberg, Coses Nostres

Great times back in the day!
