Cincinnati, OH, any audiophiles?

Any Cincinnati, OH -based audiophiles on this forum? I have found only one truly high end dealer here, and they are leaning more and more towards high end home theater so they tend to be quite busye, and no longer set up truly "reference" systems one can listen to for calibration. Would love to get into touch with other fellow maniacs in the area Hard to know what else you "need" unless you can hear it and covet it in someone else's set up!

Andres,

I'm planning to be there on Thursday. I'm really looking forward to it.----Tom--TIC---Reubent
Howdy Gang,

Tom here. I'm another Cincinnati Audiophile. I'm good friends with sbrown who replied earlier. I'm all for forming a small group. There are many people in/around Cincinnati that are into HiFi and several are fans of low-powered SET amps.

Personally, I buy lots of different stuff on AudiogoN. Try it for a while and if it doesn't "float my boat", I re-sell. Consequently, I have a lot of different stuff to listen to.

Current stuff:

Jeff Korneff 6DQ5/EL-84 SE tube amp
BottleHead Paramours 2A3 SET tube amps
Anthem Amp 1 40 watt P-P tube amp
Anthem Integrated 1 25 watt/ch P-P tube integrated

Cary CD-308
Sony DVP-S9000ES DVD/SACD
Birdland Odeon Lite DAC

Reference 3A MM De Capo Monitors
Adire HE10.1 Monitors

HT system too, but not my bag!!!

Enjoy,

Hey Cinci Audiophiles,

I still like the idea of starting a small club to get together occasionally.

I also have an idea about creating a mailing list to send out "pre-notices" when we are going to sell something on AudiogoN. I've now bought 3 or 4 pieces from local guys, including "slowhand" (Hi Tom!) who replied above.

It's nice buying locally as you can sometime audition the piece and you don't have to worry about the UPS gorillas messing up your hi-end audio pieces.

Anyone know an easy way to create and share a mailing list?

Enjoy,

Jaybo,

Cincinnati is like that town in the movie "Citty Chitty Bang Bang". In the town in Vulgaria, children were forbidden by the dutchess. They were there, in hiding, but you didn't see them out on the streets!

There are lots of audiophiles in Cincinnati. You just never see any of them! In fact, there are at least a couple of reviewers for major audiophile magazines that live in The Queen City of the West (well, it was the west in the 1800s!).

Interestingly enough, I know of at least 5 different manufacturer of audiophile products that live in Cincinnati too.

Jaybo, where do you live now? Skyline Chili is available in the canned chili section at a lot of regional grocery stores. If you can't get it where you live, let me know. I'll send you a few.

Stuben,

Absolutely interested. I'd like to hear the amps you are building. What kind of speakers do you use with those?

Currently I have a nice 2A3 tube amp built by a custom builder here in Cincinnati, a pair of Bottlehead 2A3 mono-blocks that I assembled, a Red Wine Audio Reali-T, which is a tri-path based class D amp, passive pre-amp and Scott Nixon DacKit all built into one tiny chassis. The Reali-T is battery powered too. It's really spooky good considering the cost.

I've got a couple of single driver speakers that I'm using at the moment. One is a DIY HempAcoustics unit reviewed here(I bought the review pair):

http://hempacoustics.com/Review.pdf

And the other is a Lowther DX3 in the Commonsense Audio/Lowther USA 2.5 mkI dual port cabinet.

We just had a small get together with several of participants from this thread. Maybe we can do it again soon.

Enjoy,

Alex and All,

Count me in too. I'll send you an e-mail so you'll have my contact information. Hopefully it won't be while I'm on vacation in July.... :(

Hello Cinci Area Gon'rs! I've been speaking with Larry Moore about another get-together for local Audiophiles. For those who don't know Larry, he is a builder of very high quality SET tube amps, USB DACs and horn based loudspeakers. For your reading please, here's a link to Larry's website: http://ultrafitimes.com/ .

We were hoping to have a get-togehter of ALL local audiophiles who may be interested in meeting some other audiophiles in the area. Since we don't have any idea how many people may show up, we thought it may be best to have a meeting in a public place to see how much interest we actually have in the local area.

Larry is going to be installing a small system in a local Coffee Shop in Loveland and has suggested it as a place for an open meeting of the local audiophile community. The shop is called Heaven's Roast and it is one of the few shops in the area that actually hand roast their product. Here is a link to their website: http://heavensroast.com/ .

So, is anyone interested in meeting some of the other audiophiles in the area? We're trying to judge interest for either a Thursday evening meeting or a weekend afternoon meeting. Possible dates are Thursday Oct. 11th or Saturday Oct. 13th. Feel free to either reply here or send me e-mail via my AudiogoN link. Also, feel free to copy/paste this post and send it to folks on your list of local audiophiles.

Hopefully we can get the larger audiophile audience together for a meet/greet and develop an on-going plan for periodic get-togethers.

Enjoy,

TIC
(Tom In Cincinnati)
Dre,

We're not "cast in stone" for those proposed dates yet. We're mainly first looking to see how much interest, then which day of the week works best.

So, Cinci GoN'rs, is a Thursday evening better or would you prefer a Saturday afternoon?

Enjoy,

TIC
Scot,

Welcome aboard! BTW, you are not unique in thinking there are no other audiophiles in Cincinnati! Had it not been for stumbling upon this thread a few years ago, I would not have met even half of the audiophiles I now know.

Enjoy,

It's Official! Meeting this Saturday 9/29@4PM

Calling All Cincinnati Area Audiophiles! It's official! We are going to have a meet/greet meeting this Saturday 9/29/07 @ 4 PM. The location is Heaven's Roast Coffee House in Loveland, OH. Here's a link to the Heaven's Roast Web site: http://heavensroast.com/

This is just a preliminary announcement. Later today Larry will provide a link to a page on his website with all of the details.

So, start planning now! It would be great to have a large turnout to hears some of Larry's equipment and to meet lots of the people on this thread. Also, we'll be able to discuss plans for future get-togethers.

All,

If you think you are going to make it on Saturday feel free to reply here, or to the e-mail I sent out to many of you or send me an e-mail by clicking on my user name. It would be good to have a general idea of the number of folks who plan to attend.

I really hope to meet many of you on Saturday!

Tom
All,

Thanks for the great response to the invitation. We had a great showing and it was especially good to meet some members that I'd not had a chance to meet previously. I'm really sorry that I didn't have the opportunity to get over to Larry's home afterwards to hear the double horns.

Special thanks go out to Larry Moore for lugging his 80lb. Monaco amp over to Heaven's Roast. Thanks also go out to Chris and his crew for the great coffee and snacks.

I look forward to seeing you guys again in the near future.

Enjoy,

Tom
Hey Cincinnati Audiophiles,

Are you planning to attend the AKfest 2008 in Detroit? For those who don't know, AKfest is a small audio show that is gaining quite a bit of recognition. This year the Fest has moved to a new location at the Embassy Suits in Livonia, MI. There are also a lot of new vendors attending this year.

It would be great to have a large Cincinnati contingency in attendance. I already know of 3 locals (including myself) who have planned to attend.

BTW, if you want to stay at the Embassy Suits, book a room soon. They are filling up quickly.

Here's a link to the AKFest2008 web page:

You can book a room directly from the AKFest site.

I hope to see you there.

Hi Cinci-philes,

I know Audiophiles in Cincinnati like to complain about the lack of hi-end dealers locally. Even if you take a drive to Columbus or Indianapolis you may not get a chance to see/hear much audiophile 2-channel equipment.

Anyway, a couple of months ago there was a post on the A-goN forum by "Krell_man" saying he was coming to the Cinci/Dayon area over the weekend and wanted to know if there were any good shops around. The usual suspects were recommended, but Chuck "Krell_man" had already been to Audible Elegance and Progressive (Columbus) during past visits.

To make a long story short (sorry, too late), Chuck ended up at Hanson Audio Video in Dayton and he was extremely impressed with the folks who worked there, with their philosophy regarding "how to audition equipment" and with their selection.

Here's part of the e-mail Chuck sent me after the visit to Hanson Audio Video:

"Reubent,

I listened to the SimAudio Super Nova CD Player and I-7 Integrated Amp because they were the closest components to mine. They then switched between the Dynaudio C-1's and the JMLab Micro Utopia Be because I was wanting to see what other monitors are in the same league and might work in my system.

They have put together a unique and fantastic way of auditioning pieces that you need to experience for yourself. They have all of their pieces in a separate room. You pick out whatever setup the you want to listen to (they'll help you with it if you want them too), and they'll set it all up in the listening for you. There's not this system over here and that system over there.

I really appreciated that because Friday night I went to the new Ovation Ultimate in Indianapolis to listen to the Piega and Magnepan speakers. They had them hooked up to $1,000.00 Cambridge Audio and Arcam pieces. My CD Transport and DAC are $11,000.00 and my Integrated Amp is $8,000.00, I couldn't relate to anything that I was hearing because of the difference in the level of electronic gear.

It was really nice just talking to them too, I'm terrible remembering names, but I talked to the owner and the general manager. The general manager turned me on to Michael Hedges too, I bought that CD that very night. The GM has a degree in music from the Univ. of Dayton and the owner grew up in his Dad's stereo store. They has a wealth of knowledge together.

Chuck

Sounds like an outstanding local shop and I was totally unaware of their presence in the market. BTW, I've heard the JMLabs Micro Utopia BE speakers (thanks Scott) that Chuck mentions in the e-mail. They are fantastic and if Hanson carries equipment of this quality, they are way ahead of most shops I've visited!

So, anyone know these guys? Anyone visit there shop? Anyone think we should contact them and arrange a "Cinci-phile" gathering at there shop?

This has been a public service announcement from your friendly, local audiogeek!

Hi Cinci-philes,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

I'd like to "share the wealth" a little. Joseph Galli gave ma a pair of JBL L60T 2-Way floor standing speakers when he recently moved from Cincinnati to NYC. He didn't have room to store them at his new place and he didn't want to throw them away or sit them at the curb on trash day.

Anyway, they are a really decent speaker covered in real wood verneer. Well, like Joseph, I really don't have any room for them in my small listening room or basement storage.

I would like to pass these on to another local music lover who may have a use for them. They are good speakers that probably retailed for $600+ in the early '90s. So if you, or someone you know, wants a decent pair of speakers for a second system or to give to a budding young music lover, please let me know.

Oh, and you are welcome to stop by and listen to my little system when you pick them up! I've got several cool toys that may be interesting to a budget minded audiophile.

Happy Holiday!

Scot, I'm definately going to give the JBL's away to someone (hopefully one of the local group members). They were given to me by someone in the group and I'd like to pass on the favor. Incredibly, only one inquiry so far and it was from a gentleman in Columbus. If a local doesn't respond by mid week, they're headed north!

Secondly, I too would like to send a big "Thank You!" to Mike Morrow and his wife. Once again it was a great get together. It was great talking to the regulars and meeting a few out-of-towners too.

Marc, you know I'll be there when the time comes.........

Enjoy,

Andres,

I think it would be great to have a gathering at your store. I've
never been there and it doesn't seem to be very well known by the
audiophiles I know in Cincinnati. However, I have heard GREAT things
about your store. From what I've heard you carry GREAT product
(including some very serious digital gear) and I hear that your
service is exceptional. If you decide to host a gathering, let us know
and we'll extend the invitation out to our local e-mail list in
addition to your posting on the Audiogon-Cincinnati Club Forum.

BTW, did I send you an e-mail last year inquiring about having you
host a gathering at your store? If not, I intended to, but may have
forgotten about it......

Hey Cinci Audiophiles. Does anyone have a really killer headphone amp that I can hear sometime? I've sold off all of my audio systems for a while (4-5 systems worth-Thanks AudiogoN!) My wife bought me a pair of Sennheiser HD650 HeadPhones for Christmas and I really enjoy them. I've just been using a little Nuforce Icon for USB DAC and Headphone amp for now. It really sounds pretty fantastic IMHO. But I would really like to hear the Sennheisers powered by a really high quality headphone amp.

So, anyone got a great headphone amp somewhere around Cinci? Mind if I come over sometime to see what it can do for my Sennheisers?
Tom,

I'm still here. But I don't have an audio system anymore! I'm living with a headphone rig now because I could not get my system to sound good in my new house.

But I still enjoy getting together with the gang when someone has a listening session.....

Enjoy,

Tom Turner
jk31,

Unfortunately Progressive Audio on High Street is just a memory. Gone since 2012.

Hanson Audio in Dayton is a very nice shop.
Nutty,

I was at AE a few months ago and it looked bad. Half full, rooms nearly empty, etc. That now makes sense as they were obviously paring down their lineup due to the reduction of sq. footage.

I've bought several items from AE in the past, from Linn, CAL, Vandersteen, etc. Last time I was there I did not see a single item that interested me. Hopefully they will consolidate on a few quality brands that offer good value and will have enough sales volume to keep them going.

Have you been to Hanson Audio up in Dayton? It's a seriously nice place. Great facility. Pretty good selection too. Worth a trip if you are in the market for new/retail high end. I've even bought some used stuff from them.
Cincinnati Guys,

I was in Audible Elegance again today. As Nutty said, they have downsized into about half of their old area. Things have been put back in order and they have some good systems set up in the 4 remaining rooms. The good news is that they have a nice core selection of 2-channel audio gear. I was really excited to see that they have multiple music server/streamers to audition. They have the Bluesound Vault 2 and Node 2. They also have Tidal streaming from Roon which is excellent. They have considerable experience with music streaming. If you have any interest in ripping your CD collection and streaming it, or streaming a music service like Tidal, go out to Audible Elegance for an audition to see what it's all about.
Nutty,

They did have the BAT-Maggie setup in the big room, but I didn't listen to it. Really, just spent about an hour talking with Mark and Brian about streaming audio. Got a demonstration of Roon and Tidal. This is my next area of focus, so it was a very timely visit. I enjoyed it immensely. And the good news is that AE is a dealer for both Roon and Bluesound, both products that interest me. If I go that route, will definitely buy from Audible Elegance.
Hey @nutty

I know you're still here! I see you on the music threads all the time ;~)

I was in Audible Elegance a couple of weeks ago. Talked with Mark and Brian about Bluesound Node 2i and Roon. One of these days I'm actually going to get a music server, rip all of my CDs and get Tidal. One of these days.........

I have not been to the Hanson Audio Store in Cincinnati, but I have been to their store up in Dayton. One of these days I'll check out the local store.  But I'm not much of an equipment consumer anymore. I just happily listen to music on the modest system I have now, which hasn't changed in a couple of years.

I do frequent Plaid Room Records on a regular basis. Great guys who have built a really nice business in a short amount of time.
