Class D Technology

So I get the obvious strengths of Class D. Efficiency, power output & running cool which allows for small form factors. I also understand the weaknesses somewhat. 1. Non-linear & lots of distortion that needs to be cleaned up with an output filter.
So my question is, if it weren't for efficiency & power, would there be any reason to own a Class D amp? Do they beat Class A in any other categories that count for sound quality?

I also wish you a full recovery Ralph. Hope you are mostly pain free in short order from today.
I owned the Devialet and it sounded very good, however, the Lyngdorf TA2170 with room correction is MUCH better and a very special piece. Check it out folks as it replaced over $15,000 in separates and sounds better.
Guido and others, the Lyngdorg is one such Class D design with other new and cutting edge technologies implemented. Best sounding amp I have had the pleasure of listening to. It is a dac, room correction, preamp, and amp all in one. This is indeed the future of audio and it is coming fast. I love tube amps and preamps. I love NOS dacs, I love vintage tone. This Lyndorf bettered all those other separates I still love. So Class D with other SOTA technology mixed in can not only be great, it can be stunning and best in class.

Regardless of the technology used in an amp, Class A, AB, D, H etc... It is the implementation that counts. Yes, Class D is implemented differently with emerging SOTA solutions. So buckle-up Aphiles as we are in for a great ride. I will also say this to Class D detractors. Have you heard every Class D option out there in your home? No is the obvious answer. Leave room in your mind for  the possibility that Class D with its various implementations may in fact please you.

I am a believer now and was not about 12 months ago. I had heard several Class D amps in my home and in the end thought they were OK. Well Lyngdorf changed that with their particular implenmentation......for me anyway.

Mapman, I looked into Class D as I can no longer deal with heavy amps. (back issues) My all in one Lyngdorf weights about 20 pounds. I still have one tube amp that I use on occasion with the Lyngdorf. When my tube amp is being used I use the  pre, dac and room correction portion of my Lyngdorf as the front end. I can compare the Lyngdorf  amplification to my tube amp. The Lyngdorf is better overall and does not impart a particular sound that I would define as SS, PP tube, or SET tube. It just sounds right.

I just enjoy working on point to point wired tube gear and like the look and feel of tube gear. My love for tube gear is probably more emotional and tactile than sonically based. At least this is now true based on the wonderful sound quality of the Lyngdorf.

The neat thing is the Lyngdorf's room correction passes the ideal signal through my tube amp making it perform better than it would normally.

Like you mentioned, I am now able to enjoy Class H and tube amplification in the same room, with the same gear,  when I choose. Not two systems, but two options which is fun.

Last night I listened very closely to my Class D Lyngdorf Int amp comparing it to my highly modified (for the good!) Cary Rocket88R amp with very expensive a great sounding NOS tubes all around. I must say the Lyngorf has soul, body, texture and tone in spades.

I do do keep mine on 24/7.
Agreed! They save money. I owned one and sold it however once I heard the Lyngdorf 2170 in my system. I liked the Devialet, but the Lyngdorf sounded better on my Harbeth 40.1 and Accoustic Zen Cresendo speakers. The room correction in the Lyngdorf really put it over the top once it read my room and speakers.

Both are great options for sure.
You guys are right! Please do not forget the Lyngdorf 2170 which is just amazing and class D. It is a dac, int amp, and room correction all in one. The room correction is SOTA and what makes it one of the best options out there.

Neal at Sound Science sells them. See his ad here on the Gon. It is replacing, and besting, $30,000 plus of separates.
Nicely said Guido. My Lyngdorf 2170 can also be put into the category of Class D amps that sound as good or better than the many tube and SS amps I have owned in the past. I do not hear any weakness in my integrated amp.   It actually replaced separates costing over $20,000 and sounds even better:)

I am referring to all of it as you pointed out including amplification. The Lyngdorf is completely digital dismissing the need for conventional analog preamp and dac. It is a Class D amp in the digital domain.

Fact is the times have changed in audio. Digital is blossoming with tech that combines dac, amp, preamp, room correction etc.. all into one or two boxes keeping the signal all digital up until the point the signal is sent to the speaker.

Read all the recent reviews of my Lyngdorf 2170 or the Exogal Comet and Ion amp. The future is here right now. This gear is better than all those Class A /AB amps and separate boxes of tube preamp, dac with extra ICs and power cords. We are really experiencing a very exciting time in audio history. It is happening right now as we type these posts.

I sold my cutting edge and arduously fine tuned tube and SS gear nicely packaged in numerous separates and assorted hook-up wire for today’s exciting digital tech. The sound is better. I would have never believed it, but I experienced it and love the fact that is comes in one cooling running 15 pound package.

Some very special and unrivaled sounding digital gear is currently being introduced and it is nothing short of a sonic revolution. It will sweep our landscape and render our old sonic technology as mere collectors items of days gone by. This is not some sort of small evolutionary change from classic tube gear to modern day tube gear. Rather, this is disruptive change and innovation that will forever change our hobby. This is not somewhere off in the future folks, it is here right now. What a wonderful time to be an audiophile! Especially and essentially if you are an open minded Aphile not blindly holding onto past paradigms and experiences. The cheese has indeed moved. It may take longer for some to fully accept it😊

I still like soldering and building/modding point to point wired tube gear and enjoy the way they sound. However, I know my Lyngdorf is better in every way. While it is fun for me to drop in my latest tube amp project I  fully realize it is a hobby and not SOTA.
From what I understand the Lyngdorf utilizes many new technologies and Equibit is just a small portion of it. Regardless, this one box solution is amazing in its totality.
Thanks for the link Mapman. You make a very good point and the days of 60-150 pound amps is really behind us. I would love to hear this amp on my 90db efficient speakers so hear how effortless it must sound. I may:)
The Ohm F's were the dream speaker at Tech. I listened to them often dreaming of having a set. Yes, they are still fantastic...
Tech Hifi brings back so many memories of my teenage years. I used to love looking at their brochures of systems and listening to gear.  At 15 years old I saved all I could on my first job and purchased my first system at Tech.  I still remember what I purchased!
