Dynavector retiped

Would it be better to buy a new cartridge or make a retiped of it.  I would like to retiped and convert my DV20x2H into DV20x2L
audiosens
Dear @audiosens: You can retip but no one can't changes it for lower output. To do that the cartridge needs a new recoil.

I don't believe you can re-tip the 20X series. I believe Toffco has a trade up deal for original owners. This, from what I recall anyway....
Never buy retipped cartridges, look for a perfectly working original (new or used)

BTW: Dynavector KARAT 23RS BR Ruby from the 80's is a fantastic cartridge for the money.
If refurbished by the original manufacturer it’ll be as good as new - if by any other it’ll be a different cartridge - which not necessarily a bad thing.  SoundSmith does excellent work - highly recommended

Good Listening

Greetings, I would like to share my positive Retipping experience

This past July while I was unpacking my turntable the tonearm swung lose and the cantilever on my Blackbird was damaged and bent. Upon playing and testing the sound was staticky and distorted. After researching the problem I consider my options; buy a new or used cartridge or have my Blackbird retipped. I reviewed a number of comments and recommendations on the subject through various discussion boards and decided on retipping and the services of Andy Kim.

As I considered this an opportunity to upgrade the sound and performance of my Blackbird I researched the best component and material options. About a week after talking with Andy I sent him my Blackbird. The turnaround time for delivery and return was 7 days. The day I received my Blackbird I installed it and noted some problems and contacted Andy. Andy graciously agreed to reinspect my Blackbird and apologized for any inconveniences. A few days after receiving my Blackbird he provided me with his findings from the examination and would get back to me on the best solution.

On August 23, 2018 Andy contacted me with an surprising offer to COMP me for my Blackbird; which I accepted after some consideration. Please see the attached photo of the NC-1 and the specification.

Note Andy has relocated to Californian now but his email address is still the same.

I second PBN's recommendation. I had my 10x5 retipped 6 years ago by Soundsmith. It improved the sound of the cart.  I just upgraded to a used 20x Soundsmith retip, I never have heard the original, but this cart was a huge upgrade to the 10x5 retip.
I would upgrade rather than spend money on retipping that cartridge.
The 20xl is simply not a great cartridge
AT150MLX smokes it for half the price.
@wcfeil   The Dynavector 20X series is a classic, lovely sounding cartridge.  AT?  Come on.🧐
The 20X is hardly a classic. It’s basically an entry level component one step above the 5.

Have you heard the AT? Probably not or you wouldn’t dismiss it so callously.

I’ve owned both. Believe what you wish after hearing both.
@audiosens

If you feel the Dynavector is what you enjoy, then the opinions of others don't matter.

As raul stated, it's not likely that the cartridge can be converted from a "H" high output to a "L" low output without significant changes to the motor itself.  That is probably a task for Dynavector if they would choose to perform that level of repair.

My opinion....

I recently sent a Lyra Clavis DC to Soundsmith for a new Boron cantilever and line contact stylus.  I had a roughly eight week turnaround on the "rebuild" of the cartridge.  The results and cartridge performance exceeded my expectations.  IMO, the Boron cantilever / line contact stylus combination performed much better than the original ceralloy cantilever / line contact on the Clavis DC.  Better detail, smoother treble, sharper dynamics, better timing.  More musical than the original CDC.

But that's just my opinion of the CDC rebuild using those specific components.  What differences a Soundsmith rebuild of a 20X might impose are hard to tell.  That said, I have not heard anyone complain that a Soundsmith rebuild destroyed the qualities of their cartridge.  I have heard customers claim that Soundsmith rebuilds and / or retips sound as good as new or better than new.

As always, YRMD, YMMD.
I highly recommend the NC-1 offered by Needle Clinic. I received one as a COMP and the cart is amazing. I set her up yesterday and I’ve been listening to some of my favorite albums and I must say compared to my Blackbird, Benz Micro Wood and my Grado Wood RP it’s sound is superior.
