All of you have been on your A game the last couple of days! Wow, sweet!
On the Mingus "A Train" clip, Eric Dolphy would be dead in 2 short months.

Jazz for aficionados
I had never heard of Dafnis Prieto or his music before. You can hear the cuban rhythms, mixed with post bob. Very talented and interesting. Thanks Frogman! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9MaVKACKhM |
Had to add this! The underrated Carlos Ward. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZqkPnQ_41U Should "The Wedding" be a standard? Maybe just a song I like. |
Maybe you will feel more at home with the song "Jazz Police"! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB8vzBcoEcg |
O-10, I am sorry to say ,I know very little about African jazz. I am a huge Dollar Brand/ Abdullah Ibrihim fan. I still have not found time to even research the issue of African jazz. Things are settling in a little, and it seems like an interesting topic, but I can't guarantee anything in the next few days. Do what you thick is best. |
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JacX51ihws I will have to read/listen to the last week and catch up, but this band is good! |
A little test. Who is great and who is inportant? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7xdsB095wc Charlie Parker Dizzy Gilespie Fats Navarro JJ Johnson Kai winding Buddy DeFranco Charlie Ventura Ernie Caceres Lennie Tristano Eddie Safranski Shelley Manne http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zB7ad5sEp-8 |
Rok, there is only one Joe Williams, but I don't think he is trying to compete with Joe. Very interesting songs. I would think you would like his soulful side. More Marvin Gaye than Joe Williams, but he loves Jazz. Can't be all bad! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HvpIgHBSdo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv4iZDkjzj8 |
#4 -The Cuban Son. Rok already did the Wiki version, so I found this. http://www.justsalsa.com/salsa/music/son/ |
#2 Son Montuno http://lasalsaviveny.blogspot.com/2011/03/arsenio-rodriguez-father-of-son-montuno.html A little Son Montuno lesson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CmbGh4efBw |
#3- Danzonete- cha- There is very little info on this term. There is a small reference in this Danzon post. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danzón http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/danzonete I would assume the Cha-Cha-Cha would be involved. Maybe a Cuban music expert can help???? |
It seems to me most people are impressed by just 3 things: how fast you play, how high you can play, and how loud you can play. I find this a little exasperating, but I'm a lot more experienced now, and I understand that probably less tan 2% of the public can really hear. When I say hear , I mean follow a horn players through his ideas, And be able to understand those ideas in relation to the changes, if the changes are completely modern. Chet Baker "Nothing is new under the sun" Solomon |
Speaking of the Tango… From one of my guilty pleasure recordings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1uNIXdEN1U Also found this, from the same recording http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GwK7jKW5B4 |
I may owe Rok an apology. I listened to a few cuts of the Dr. John CD and what I heard was, at least on first listen, not good. I will have to hear more latter. Seemed more "old school" than "modern." Ms. Morrow has a strong background and praise from Curtis Fuller cannot to be overlooked. I will have to keep an eye on her. |
They all have their great moments, and sound of course is not what we want, but great music. Great musicians! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPXIIokdc1U |
Great music O-10. Great ringside memories! Thanks! Alexatpos, seeing Pat Martino live has got to be great! Hopefully he is in good health. The last time I saw Johnny Winter he was having a bad night, and was led on stage. Not the way you want to remember him, but I guess thats what he wanted. Hope it was good. The good thing about moving is I got a bedroom for all my music. I am finding things I forgot I had. I was listening to Bobby Shew today. WOW! From a hard to find LP that never made it to Digital. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNlNoqxGOLo- |
Happy Thanksgiving! Lots of good suggestions lately! An ambitious work. Changing the small group Shorter compositions to Big Band. Sometimes works better than others. I have been enjoying it lately. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZl12wxfghU |
Dave Holland has been putting out great music for a long time. These same musicians, except Nate Smith subbing for Billy Kilson on drums , put out a real good record in 1999. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2qIZ-BwiE4 |
Just found out Gerald Wilson died on Oct. 12. Someone who's music I could always count on. Always Awesome! RIP. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g63idAii3lw |
David Kikoski is always good. Keep a close eye on Seamus in the future, but has some good recordings already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mk2w93GJY |
