Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Not that they mean much, but sometimes the Grammys get it right.  Congrats to Wayne Shorter, & bandmates Brian Blade, John Pattitucci, and Danilo Perez for the Jazz win!  And a special shout-out to a favorite; Dafnis Prieto, and his Big Band, for the win in Latin Jazz!  Prieto's having a banner year!

Roberto Quintero's one of the great percussionists, and has been for quite some time.  I have ton's of records with him on them.  Hey, he's in the Dafnis Prieto video I just posted!

Here's one of Roberto; alongside his equally-legendary cousin Luisito (a monsta playa, recently toured with Corea but's primarily known for his work with the Spanish Harlem Orchestra).  Incredible percussionists!

In any event a great talent .

Happy the fellows got the Grammy, but I still think Brahms was a better composer .

I have listened to Shorter's new recording but do not own it. The music is terrific but the 50 dollar plus price tag for 3 CD's is ridiculous. I don't see the relevance of a graphic novel and colorful presentation to justify the price. If it was a limited edition, with just 2500 in this format available I could relate.

The right thing to do would have been to release it as a limited deluxe set of 2500 - 5000 copies and a mass produced 3 disc music only set for half the price.

I am going to wait a year and see if they re-release it in a budget format. The mp3 is 15 bucks but the quality of sound would not be up to my standards.
