I just learned yesterday that Bill Pitcock IV died of Cancer back in 2011. He was the guitarist in the Dwight Twilley Band, and played that great flurry-of-notes break in the middle of "I'm on Fire". You smokers hear this all the time, but.....Bill was a two-pack-a-day man since his teens, and lived to only 58. Like other great guitarists I've know, he had a terrible diet (a liter bottle of Coke and a cigarette pack were always within reach) and just smoked, drank Coke, and played guitar, every day, all day.
RIP I should have seen him on one of the many times he came around my neck of the woods.Always have enjoyed his playing.
Johnny was simply one of a kind. I had the pleasure of seeing him play in close-up outdoor venues twice in his later years, and although he was weak in body (he always played seated), his hands and mind for playing were as brilliant as ever.
If there was ever an example of a forgotten great rocker, he must be near the top of the list. It just sickens me that 30 or more years down the road, we are still hearing tripe from bands like Scorpions and never a note from this great rock and bluesman. The general public has bad taste and a short memory.
I saw Johnny once in the 80's and once in the 90's--wish I'd seen him in the 70's. He was an amazing player and an inspiration to the younger players. Best thing ever to come out of Beaumont, TX, that's for certain.
