Magico S5 vs Revel Salon 2

Hi all,

I have read some glowing reports from both forum members and professional reviewers, on the Magico S5's.

I have been a happy Revel Salon 2 owner for a few years, but I am getting the upgrade itch again.

I am only at the early stages of considering this, so I will of course be conducting dealer and home demo's when the time comes.

In the meantime I would be really interested to hear from anyone that has compared both the S5 and the Salon 2 - ideally side by side in the same room and system. I'm interested to hear how the two models compare in performance terms (I appreciate there is a considerable price differential), particularly in reference to imaging/sound stage, detail retrieval and dynamics.

Thanks in advance,

I hope by your comment you mean, can I look elsewhere in my system to make the changes rather than the speakers (rather than can I just take a hike!).

Indeed. I would not be so rude to suggest the latter. But as Ptss said, tell us about the complete system so we can have some fun analyzing it. ;-)

Regards,
Ha! Yes, I could! I hope by your comment you mean, can I look elsewhere in my system to make the changes rather than the speakers (rather than can I just take a hike!).

The answer to that is probably 'yes', but at this point I'd like to hear from someone that has compared the Magico's directly with the Salon 2's just to hear what, if any, differences there are in performance.
You haven't mentioned anything else in your system. Instead of marginal speaker differences why not examine overall system benefits, The right ones can provide a much better ROI and sound. Source(s), isolation, pc's, i/c's, speakers cables, power conditioning, room treatment. Individually they can be a better upgrade-combined- nirvana.
If you have an itch (and do I understand) can you scratch it somewhere else? The Revel Salon 2 are pretty damn fine loudspeakers.

Regards,
Thanks for the reply ptm.

I have a definite preference for traditional box type speakers TBH. I don't have the room to allow a planar to breathe properly, and I haven't heard a horn loaded speaker that I liked the sound of so far (not that I've heard many, though one was the JBL Everest - which sounded terrible).

You may be spot on though, the differences between the Salon 2 and the S5 may be very small, I don't know.
The Revel's are a great speaker, but I can see how you might be tempted to try a Magico. However, their essential design is very similar. How different is it really going to sound to you? Subtelties ...

Why don;t you try something completely different, like a planer or a horn? Now that might be an interesting experiment.
