Wherever did you hear such nonsense? The coax is superior to the toslink. That said, the difference is not that big if you have basic consumer level gear. Good luck. Just buy the coax. Try Harmonic Technology Cyberlink copper, hard to beat at$99.
thats what I thought BMPNYC but I read that on the belcanto dac1 site and I was told that by birdland audio because it makes digital source less critical and eliminates jitter better that is when used with dvd ,that is why Iam asking because I want to know if that is true
That´s Bel Canto recommendation. A week ago read in a thread that Toslink breaks electrical connection between DAC and transport and less correction is required. I had at first same reaction but this seems to be the underlying reason. I´ve also got recommendations on glass optical cable with excellente results made by Monster with low cost.
Using toslink has a theoretical advantage in that there is no earth connection between the transport and DAC - thereby eliminating one source of jitter. But in practise toslink still sounds awful, in my experience, compared with any competent coax cable. The same recommendation to use toslink was (is) also made by Monarchy with respect to their DIP jitter reducer - but in practise the toslink sounds awful with the DIP too. Much as Bel Canto wish to believe their DAC eliminates the jitter introduced by a toslink cable, I remain sceptical.
Maybe I'm a "tin ear", but I'm damned if I think the coax is a distinct improvement over TOSlink. I have a DVD player that has both types of outputs, so I can switch from one type to the other. There is a difference in the sound, but I'm not sure one is particularly better than the other. I'm using a very good quality digital coax cable, but bought the Monster Cable TOSlink for $40 to see if it was satisfactory. It uses glass fiber rather than optical-grade plastic, and is sounds fine to these ears. The way for you to find out is locate an understanding audio retailer who will let you try both types of cable and decide for yourself after listening tests. Bet you won't hear much difference either!
You know I admire sdcampbell.Honest enough, and not afraid to tell it like "hears it" If you can't hear the dif. don't pay more for what you can't hear. Can't recall the exact dialog;the movie "Boogy Nights" Remember the sales pitch? Lotta' that stuff is how people buy and have bought their stuff.(being sold instead of buying)Remember Chucky wasn't talking about Linn sondek cd12, Wadia, Burmiester,or sacd. Your average dvd player into your avarage av reciever's dig in ,cdcampbell is probably "dead nuts on" calling them like he hears them
