Using an Auralic Aries Mini into a Schiit Gungnir MB to listen to ripped CDs as well as music from Tidal, Spotify and internet radio (like Radio Paradise that reubent has posted about). Spotify’s Browse/Discover function has been a great way to discover new music.
Last night listened to William Orbit’s "Hinterland" on Tidal. Number 4 in his Strange Cargo series.
A point of clarification. The Minority Report isn’t strictly CD only, though at the time it was started (2012) CD was the prevailing "digital" medium (the biggest part of the "non-vinyl half") - hence "What’s in your CDP tonight?" Over the intervening 5 years, my CDP has gotten less and less use. Most of what I’m posting there is from Tidal or Spotify along with CDs ripped to hard drive. It’s rare to be actually spinning a disc these days though I still prefer to buy when I find a "keeper" on one of the services. Amazing how quickly things change. |
Haha...the TEAC (Distinction series) I don't use (much) could be considered a poor cousin to your Esoteric. Likewise, to your Pioneer, I have a Denon 2910 I recently re-discovered. Nice, pre-blueray, universal player. |

A quick comment about Dire Straits’ Communique. I remember that one taking some time to appreciate vs what seemed at the time the much stronger S/T debut. However, over the years, Communique gets played more often and in particular the last two tracks: Single-Handed Sailor and Follow Me Home...great music, great sonics. IMO, everything you need to know about DS in 10 and half minutes.
FWIW - re Supertramp, there were weeks after it first came out that Even in the Quietest Moments was getting played every night and often more than once. |

Ah...10cc's "Deceptive Bends". Good album, Uberwaltz. Agree with you about Feel The Benefit. That's the main reason I own the recording (actually have it on old vinyl). I was surprised reading the Wikipedia entry to see credits for composition do not include Godley or Creme for any of the tracks. I had always sort of believed those two WERE 10cc (much like Becker & Fagen were Steely Dan). Shows how much I know.

Found two albums by a Texas trio named Khruangbin (Thai for "airplane" according to the intro on Tidal). Is this what you mean? The 2 are Con Todo el Mundo (so far, instrumental with occasional vocal effects) and The Universe Smiles Upon You. Haven’t started listening to this one.
Listening to el Mundo's Track 2 Lady and the Man. It’s got a bit of a Talking Heads/David Byrne thing going, esp. the lyrics. Track 3, maria Tambien is minimalist and funky. VERY good sonics.

Don't do it, U ! You don't have to post every hour or even every day. Save it for something extraordinary you've listened to. I'm heartened by your "obsessive listening" (there're are others out there!) even if tastes are not always identical. Same goes for Slaw posting on What's Playing On Your Turntable Today? or Nutty's What's Playing On Your System Today. I do sometimes get ideas for my own listening from your content and theirs. I listen to Tidal regularly but usually just post about it, when the spirit moves, over on the What's In Your CDP Tonight? thread. That was always intended as a digital listening thread alternative to the turntable thread that Slaw has adopted. No problem with redundancy and overlap, however. My main goal for listing a recording is to give it a little more exposure and maybe maybe maybe turn someone else on to something they've not heard before. A noble cause or maybe just a manifestation of mania. Hah...I can sympathize. Did my share of time in Ship Channel refineries and chem plants wearing Nomex and the rest of the safety gear. Nothing like being next to an operating reactor in July afternoon heat down there. Well, maybe crawling through a boiler that just got taken out of service but, fortunately, I didn't work that side of the house.

Hi Uber. Those 6 deletions, my doing. Sorry 'bout that. When I was trying to enter that Goldfrapp recording, I kept getting an error message that it hadn't posted. Being foolishly persistent, I persevered only to discover, despite the error message (I forget the numerical code that accompanied it) ALL my attempts had been successful. Half a dozen listings about the same album did look kind of ridiculous so I went in and deleted them leaving only one.
Did you try the Felt Mountain at all? Quirky and interesting with great sonics. Good for late night. |
Howdy U...glad you tried Felt Mountain. I only listened once but plan to revisit it. Try it on your main system when home. The sonics are well worth it. Yup...know what you mean about falling asleep and aging. Seems I can't make it through an afternoon session these days without an involuntary "nap". |

Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles
HH’s 4th album as leader (so I read). Striking how fresh and very contemporary this 1964 recording sounds. Quite the lineup too with Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter & Tony Williams. The Egg (track 4) at 14 minutes is not your grand-daddy’s overplayed, classic jazz standard.

Gillian Welch, indeed. The significant other of Dave Rawlings. Ever listened to any of The Dave Rawlings Machine? Sort of country but warped. The music seems more profound than the lyrics but maybe the lyrics are an insider thing that I just don’t get. Anyway, Nashville Obsolete and Friend of a Friend are worth checking out. Pretty certain GW does harmony vocals with him. String arrangements on one of those (Nashville Obsolete, I think) are superb. |
