What's your favorite lyric from a song?

Just curious what stays with people...

Maxnewid,
The Crystal Ship (singular) is a good song, but the lyric actually reads:
"Before you slip into unconciousness, I'd like to have another kiss."
"Before you fade away" isn't in there at all.
Good choice though.
God, there are so many, and the words absent of the musical accompaniment lose a lot of their impact if the reader has never heard the song. A few that come to mind out of many for me
Jimi Hendrix- Castles Made of Sand
It's a Beautiful Day- White Bird
Jethro Tull- Look into the Sun
Jefferson Airplane- Today, Hey Fredrick, and Eskimo Blue Day
The Kinks-Big Sky
Janis Joplin with Big Brother- Blindman

The Kinks- Big Sky

Big Sky looks down on all the people looking up at the Big Sky.
Everybody pushing one another around
Big Sky feels sad when he sees the children scream and cry
But the Big Sky is too big to let it get him down.

Big Sky too big to cry
Big Sky too high to see
People like you and me

One day we'll be free, we won't care, just you see
'Til that day can be, don't let it get you down
When I feel that the world is too much for me
I think of the Big Sky, and nothing matters much to me.

Big Sky looks down on all the people who think they got problems
They get depressed and they hold their head in their hands and cry.
People lift up their hands and they look up to the Big Sky
But the Big Sky is too big to sympathize

Big Sky's too occupied
Though he would like to try
And he feels bad inside
Big Sky's too big to cry

One day we'll be free, we won't care, just you wait and see
'Til that day can be, don't let it get you down.
Hi Blkadr,
I do that when I find a recommendation of interest in forums that recommend particular artists or songs. I just meant that in the context of just reading lyrics without music, I don't find it very satisfying or meaningful.
Pcoombs,
Morrissey has so many great lyrics, it would be hard to know where to start. "Bigmouth Strikes Again" is another of many.
I'm going to see him for the second time in Phoenix on Feb 10th. Looking forward to it.
This sounds like a good idea for a thread, but I have noticed that when lyrics are separated from music, a lot is lost. If I have never heard the song, it's hard to have a feel for the meaning or context, so it either reads strangely, or sometimes falls flat altogether. If I could hear it, I'm sure it would be different.
I wonder if other members have the same feelng.
n80,
I just tried Blanton's for the first time several months ago...that's good stuff! I haven't liked Jack for a long time, too harsh, but I really like Jim Beam Black Label too.
Al,
I heard the "kiss this guy" thing years ago, and always took it as a joke, I never thought anyone actually took it to be the real lyric. I never heard that version of the Shocking Blue lyric...that's funny.
Here's one for you. A DJ in Philly in the late 80's was playing the Police song "Wrapped Around Your Finger", and he said it sounded like Sting was saying "I'll eat rats around your finger", and I swear, if you listen to it on a low resolution system, or ideally, on the radio, it really sounds like that's what he's saying.
geoffkait,
It's actually not bad. You should try it.

roberjerman,
That's a great Airplane song, but the words actually go:
Lather was 30 years old today, they took away all of his toys. His mother sent newspaper clippings to him about his old friends who'd stopped being boys.
cd318,
I guess it probably comes off better with music. As prose it doesn't make a lot of sense.
