Wiener Walzer, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Reiner

Category: Music

This is a German RCA Gold Seal copy on vinyl LP of waltzes by Johann and Josef Strauss. Titles include "Wiener Blut," "Kuntslerleben," "Rosen aus dem Suden," "An der schonen blauten Donau," "Dorfschwalben aus Osterreich," and "Kaiserwalzer."
I do not remember what the equivalent American title might have been. But the sound from the Living Stereo erea is magnificent. Superb delineation of the Chicago Symphony string sections, the sensational brass section, and great representation of the relatively shallow stage at Orchestra Hall. The Reiner interpretatiions are also beyond reproach. My particular favorite is "Rosen aus dem Suden," the concluding track on the first side. Momentum builds ever so gently until the final brass chorus. The concluding moments of "Rosen" are as fine a musical moment as I could recall from any Reiner recording with the Chicago Symphony. Sounds like a great CSO road trip to Milwaukee, where I would imagine the good folks were brought to their feet.
