Large Object Between Mini Monitors on Stands...

...such as a deep cabinet for electronics etc (in my own situation, a drafting table) Is this more on the order of a "deal killer" for using the speakers on stands (esp. as compared to high shelves) or more of a minor impediment to optimum performance or none at all?

I've had a four to five foot long aquarium in between my speakers since I was fourteen years old (36 years ago) so I don't even know what nuthin' between the speaker sounds like. I do have exceptional imaging, though. If you like tropical fish that is.

I heard with tropical fish between the speakers the image has a tendency to wander.
I would imagine a horizontal large object like a drafting table would be less objectionable than a vertical large object like a deep cabinet between speakers.
