Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

You made the statement. (African influence in Jazz)   You now should show us why you made it.   I know, I won't get it.   I know, it will be over my head.   I know, only a school-trained musician like yourself would be able to hear it, but just this once,  step down from music Olympus and humor us mortals.

Cheers

I have posted several clips of commentary and articles and how it all relates to everything (well, almost everything; not Bolero ☺️) that has been posted here many times.  Actually, your man Wynton did a pretty good job of explaining it all and it applies to most of what has been posted here.  So, take your pick of the examples.  Why don't you start with Wynton? What is really fascinating here is how you personalize all this.  It's not just me that is saying this.  It's everyone else too; except you.  I believe the onus is on you; if you want to go down that road.  Either way, fine with me.

Lay it on me dude, I want to hear it too; the afro in the Bebop, before Diz added it onto the Rebop and called it "Afrobop". But since he did it without consulting the "Bird" that would make it "illegitimate", and not worthy of my consideration.

Listening to this, I thought I was in a big black pot, filled with water and veggies, in the middle on a village in the Congo.  Around supper time.

Cheers

I like to listen to stuff like this, but would never actually buy it.
