CDs are incredibly inexpensive to produce, so there is plenty of room for the retail prices to be lowered before the record companies give up on the format.
My bet is that CDs will be produced well beyond the five year mark.
There recently was an APL Denon 3910 with DAC input offered for sale in the mid $4k range. This is a terrific universal player with the ability to input another source (computer, Squeezebox, etc...).
Keep an eye out if another is listed for sale.
